10-15 years ago I had friends I would talk to daily here, other forums, video rooms, and chatrooms. Even closer to five years ago Id DM internet friends regularly on Facebook and be part of group message things.

Now I feel like I dont have many internet friends at all. I dont really talk to anyone on PotD outside of PotD, and most of the other places I used to visit have been closed or just died of inactivity. I post on Reddit but not in a way that Im familiar with anyone Im talking to. Im part of a few Discord groups for interests I have but I dont really know how to social navigate discord lmao. I was part of the group that has posts from here, for example, but I always felt like a huge dweeb who didnt contribute anything.

Is everyone like this, or am I just bad at maintaining e-friendships? Is that just what getting older is like, or is this a phenomena of chatrooms and forums becoming less popular? Maybe recently moving away from all my college friends is making me more aware id how lonely I am haha or something.

You were much younger back then, as were the friends you had.

I have more or less the same friends I had 8 years ago.
I had a group of friends when I was a teeenager and then transitioned to a group of friends I made as an adult with a grey area of when I was in the 21-23-ish range where none of those people are in my life anymore.

You don't have to contribute anything to the discord except whatever time you want to spend in there chatting, fyi. We've all known each other long enough in there to pop in and out whenever and just chat. So don't feel bad.

I don't think I agree with this. I've had some really close online friends in the past, which have felt way more than acquaintances.

Random people on PotD I've talked to for the past 15 years are not the same as the people that I talk to daily on discord. The difference is that talking to them is not a parasocial relationship like it is on here and other discord channels. How is it that despite being on here for 15 years I don't know crap about most users?

Knew more about the people I met on small forums in the 2000s before I started posting on PotD.

Everything is better in the past. In the future, you'll look back fondly on this very topic, remembering how nice it was when people actually replied to you.

Oh it's because everyone moved to discord groups.

I have way more personal connections than anywhere else right now through discord. I've met more people from a podcast I'm in/run than ever from PotD, about a discord group.

I made my very best friend from PotD. A friend that could be a lifetime friend. It happens. We travel across country to see each other every couple of years. This year we're going to NYC together.
