The governments top Supreme Court lawyer may have saved President Joe Bidens $400 billion student loan forgiveness plan from what experts considered all but certain defeat. Experts lobbed praise on Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, the lawyer who represented the Biden administration in front of the nine justices Tuesday. The Biden administration now seems more likely than not to win the cases, said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Her preparation, poise and power were impressive, Kantrowitz said.

In contrast, the attorneys for plaintiffs opposed to the program were less than stellar, Kantrowitz said. It was like the difference between a star quarterback and two tiddlywinks players, he said. University of Illinois Chicago law professor Steven Schwinn agreed: Prelogar knocked it out of the park. I do think she could have influenced or even changed the thinking of two justices, maybe more, he added. On Wednesday, Fordham law professor Jed Shugerman tweeted that he remains struck by SG Elizabeth Prelogars brilliant performance. She may have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, Shugerman wrote. The nine justices considered two legal challenges to Bidens plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers. Six GOP-led states Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Carolina had brought one of the lawsuits, and the other was backed by the Job Creators Network Foundation, a conservative advocacy organization.

Yay. I stopped paying my student loans just in case they get cancelled.

No she hasn't. Stop kidding yourselves.

The article doesn't even bother to tell what she actually said or did. It's just heaps of mindless praise with no specifics.

I'd love to believe that making a home-run of a legal argument carries more weight than political alignment / ideology with the acting SCOTUS, but...

It doesn't matter with the current SCOTUS. Conservatives could send a barking dog up and it wouldn't matter because they exist to push through conservative policies not to weigh the arguments of lawyers against or interpret the constitution.

The briefs do the vast majority of the heavy lifting in appellate work. Chances are there's a draft of the opinion drafted or partially drafted, and in the case of of the former, there's a good chance that it's been circulated among the justices.

This. It's all about the writing, oral arguments matter very little except as a chance to screw up and confirm that you should lose.

And as another poster said, they didn't even bother to identify what she actually did or what arguments she made that saved the day. If those arguments were in the briefs, that's what actually matters. If they weren't, that's poor lawyering and the administrations is probably going to lose.

Wouldn't imposing debt limit income and thus hinder spending that creates the need for jobs?
