But thats what Ive been saying this whole time. Rock properly called out Smith for choosing that particular time to finally confront him about whatever beef has been between them.

And I agree with Rock. It was a bitch move to, after a year-plus of getting dragged about things a lot worse than a haircut, to pick the guy thats a foot shorter and 80 pounds lighter to final snap on.

Why didnt he confront Charlamagne, who said MUCH worse things about Jada? Because Charlamagne wouldve whooped his ass, thats why.

It was also a bitch move to do it in that setting where he knew Rock wouldnt fight back.

So while we both agree that you need to defend your wifes honor, we also should be in agreement that how you do it can and will be judged.

Tbf, I feel like the fact that Chris said it in person had more to do with that. I mean, it's not like Will is gonna fly out to Charlamagne's address to slap him.

But Will did NOTHING for a solid year-plus about an issue A LOT more personal and with people saying A LOT worse things, and his "breaking point" was a 140 pound comic making a PG joke about his wife's short haircut. Dude was DRAGGED for months about his wife stepping out and him just sitting there and taking it, but a tossaway joke about a 30 year old movie was the breaking point.

OK.

To be fair, making a joke referencing a 30 year old movie is pretty cringe.

We're in the 2020's not 1990's.

Get some fresh references my guy.

"Did everyone hear the news about the soviet union falling apart?!??"

Yep. we sure did. In 1991. Thanks.

Exactly. Will didn't even speak out against anyone else during that whole time. That's another reason why the Chris move was so lame. Like, oh now you're so pissed off? Now you're going to protect her but not when everyone was calling her out her name? Lol punk move

idk if anybody has ever listened to charla's podcasts but he does not sound like a dude that's going to pop off on will in the same scenario immediately. he's talked a lot about healing and getting your mind right, therapy, meditation, etc. he literally hugs his tree in his back yard while barefoot.

not saying he wouldn't do what's necessary to defend himself and protect people. but he sounds like someone that would think twice about retaliating on will smith.

Maybe I'm playing devil's advocate here, but there's also the possibility that maybe Will only slapped Chris precisely because the two were close?

Maybe that comment (for whatever reason, because it really was a tame ass joke) stung differently coming from Chris' mouth?

Oh, that's definitely it. Not sure if anyone is denying it.

There's been a rift between Rock and the Smiths going back years. They used to be fairly close, and there was some sort of falling out about 15-20 years ago.

He made the joke at the Oscars, and allegedly went off script.

So in this particular example, it wasn't him getting paid a ton to entertain people.

If he was making 30 year old jokes during his normal standup routine, then you'd have a valid point.

He was a presenter, not the host. Presenters do not get paid.

If you were wondering whether the presenters at the Oscars and other awards shows get paid, the answer appears to be no, or at least they get paid next to nothing. When Tiffany Haddish presented at the Oscars this year, for instance, she was asked afterward whether she would ever be interested in hosting the show herself. She said, I would totally do it if we get paid! Cause I didnt get paid for [presenting tonight.]

So you put jokes on the same level as physical assault. Bro, stop and think for a moment. Clear your brain of the slogans and rhetoric, then replace it with substantive thought.

Last I'll add, Rock popularized that 'there's black people and there's n-words' narrative that a million and one frat boys used as license to become comfortable using the 'n-word'.

Rock has said he regrets the development but here again is a situation where maybe he should have thought better before opening his mouth.

This is revisionist history, as it wasn't known that was the reason why she had that hairstyle.
Especially when you factor in Jada tended to have short hairstyles basically her entire time in the spotlight.

Not gonna lie, I'm kinda dumbfounded about how, especially in this day and age, how many people truly feel Will Smith was justified for physically hitting another man over the words he said.

I don't really think it's that. I think we've actually become more complacent and forgot how some things used to be. I remember in the 90s it being encouraged to walk away from escalating an encounter over words because you might get shot. Women wouldn't encourage their dude to fight over just a remark (and the ones that did encourage that behavior were looked down upon.) But that hasn't happened in awhile on such a regular basis, so now folks want to jump bad.

I think a lot of the discussion around this incident ends up just being about who you like more, cuz there's no universe in which Will Smith is the morally correct person in this situation. Even after the stand up special.

Also there's really no reason to bring up things from Chris Rock's past to justify him getting slapped. The whole "he was rejected from Jada Pinkett Smith" shit seems entirely made up, his old standup routines concerning racial slurs are irrelevant, etc.

There's definitely some of this, I'm guessing. I was trying to take it simply from a "Person A" and "Person B" perspective, because even if it wasn't Rock, I'd (probably) be defending the comic in this situation regardless.

I'd have a tough time getting myself to watch The Five to see exactly what they said, but sometimes a blind squirrel finds a nut.

This isn't a Chappelle situation, where he said some hurtful things that affect an entire community, and then doubled down on those statements by saying even worse things. This is a joke aimed at ONE person in particular, and when ONE person overreacted to it, Rock called that person a bitch for doing so. Something many, MANY, people before him had already said.
