I wouldn't be at all surprised if this ends up being the last console generation.
Nintendo may fart out another portable or two, but PC is finally gaining decent momentum. All it takes for PC to finally dominate forever, is a drastic reduction in GPU prices and "AAA" developers ceasing to insist on always chasing specs.

There may not be a PS6, or Xbox whatever.
Maybe a "Pro" for the existing generation, but that's it. If games start appearing that explicitly do not support XSS, then we know it's happening.

I can see that. Wouldn't bother me tbh considering how fragile consoles have become. I can still play my Sega Genesis I got 31 years ago with no issues. On the flip side, two years ago I had to replace the thermal paste and clean my PS4 cause it was overheating. Had to send my Switch to Nintendo cause the wifi card failed which caused it to not boot.

Well yeah but we have things like Steam and GOG that keep games playable. Not to mention other ways to emulate or use VMs. Much different than requiring a console with particular hardware requirements.

People who choose console over PC aren't usually doing it for the system's power, they're doing it for the convenience and/or cost. There are probably some dinosaurs out there who are also choosing console for the easier access to local multiplayer, as rare as it's becoming these days.

This is why I suspect Xbox is going to kill off "gold" fairly soon. XS has no exclusives whatsoever, and the 'nerdbro' market they're after is continuously leaking to PC, where the online play doesn't have a monthly fee and KB/M elitists insists the controls are better.
Gamepass is bigger money-printer for MS now anyway.

PS3 had a miserable first few years but it had DeS and DS1 back when the novelty of those games was still fresh going for it. It had most of what the 360 had going for it too.
PS4 was horrendous start to finish.
PS5 is PS4.

Pa5 is amazing and literally the definitive vr machine at the moment

I could see PS6/next-next-gen Xbox to be basically the last ones actually. I think there's a little bit where PS5/XSX still struggle, with stuff like 4K and 60+fps and raytracing and whatever altogether. But going much beyond that is where the changes really get into the "is it really worth upgrading more" territory.

And also, just money. Who cares if the PS7 isn't actually any better than the PS6 in any way you could actually tell?

through steam sales, pc is also cheaper than consoles if you buy any more than like 2 games a year
