It's internal rather than external motivations.Confronting the realities of his creepy cult family, figuring out what being a mandalorian actually is. Dispelling the myth about Mandalore being uninhabitable opens the door to actually starting to rebuild the mandalorians. There's plenty of motivations; they're just more understated than "here's the next caped bad guy."

I definitely see a point where he finally figures out the darksaber and has the opportunity to lead Mandalore back to recovery but has to make some kind of choice about the path he wants to take it (Armorer's vs. Katan's ways).

I get this feeling that the Armorer and the rest are gonna end up opposing Mando. They're clearly very cult like and I think they're gonna end up playing that up. "This is not the way"

Episode was a little too dark on my end

Loved it, its very very much Star Wars.
Bo Katarn was great, and badass. The Episode was dark sure but it's set in underground mines so yeah. Could still see everything going on.
