I'm really looking forward to it given all the info so far. Character creation sounds great, handcrafted spaces with loads of extra autogenerated area to explore is a good mix I think (kind of like Daggerfall thinking about it), I love the more analogue look to the technology, also spaceships are just cool.

Not crazy about base-building coming back, but I can see why. I hope it's both less of a focused and more fully featured than Fallout 4. I hated how necessary it felt. It was fun on my first playthrough, but in later ones I wanna get on with the rest of the game but instead it wants me to build 20 towns.

The gameplay they showed looked like Fallout 4 in space to me.

It'll probably be a very good game, but it doesn't excite me enough to start working on a new PC so that I can actually play it.

Looks pretty good, and I'm hopelessly addicted to the Bethesda open-world formula. On the other hand, they've majorly trashed their rep over the past few years. Will likely be my first 'wait and see' major release from them.

You mean, Starfield pre-317,000 patches releases on September 6th, 2023.

Ultimately, true Starfield probably releases in 2026bafter all the patches.

Ultimately, Starfield probably releases in 2025 after all the patches.

Heh, you assume that Bethesda is competent / caring enough to release nearly that many patches. They'll release 5-6 patches throughout the year after release (along with 5-6 hotfixes for some of the new bugs the patches introduce), then wash their hands of the game until the inevitable next-gen rerelease. And for added fun, they'll always prioritize fixing beneficial exploits over quest / game-breaking bugs.

Bethesda has a history of cutting off support for their major games one year after release (although the Creation Club and rereleases have arguably upended this tradition). This was never more egregious than when they offered a Season Pass for Fallout 4, with the implicit promise that 4 would be getting significantly more addon content than previous games, only to turn around and offer pretty much the same amount of DLC content as Oblivion / FO3 / Skyrim before cutting it off. IIRC someone even filed and unsuccessful suit to get Bethesda to count Creation Club content as being covered under the Season Pass.

I'm optimistic only for the fact that it's supposed to have more handmade areas compared to any other Bethesda game. They touted the procedurally generated planets, but those are mostly a supplement.

Unless the Fallout 3 DLC came out quicker than I remember, there isn't a single Bethesda Studios game that's had support cut off a year after release, at least not in the past 20 years.

It occurs to me that we may have different definitions of the word 'support;' in case we do, I'm talking specifically about postrelease addon content and patches / bugfixes. So I went back and got the dates to see how well my memory held up.

(Excluding Creation Club content / patches for the time being)

ES IV: Oblivion: 3/20/2006
Final DLC: 10/15/2007
Final Patch: 4/30/2007
(Although the bulk of the support was wrapped up within 13 months, it looks like Oblivion went the farthest. I do remember Battlehorn Castle coming out of nowhere long after I thought Oblivion's postrelease content had dried up.)

Fallout 3: 10/28/2008
Final DLC: 8/3/2009
Final Patch: 4/19/2009 - 9/17/2009 (depending on system)
(PS3 clusterfuckery notwithstanding, support was cut off in around 10 months)

Skyrim: 11/11/2011
Final DLC: 12/4/2012
Final Patch: 3/18/2013
(Skyrim stretched it to 16 months before ending support)

Fallout 4: 11/10/2015
Final DLC: 8/30/2016
Final Patch: 2/9/2017
(15 months on this one)

So technically, I was incorrect; the support for these games generally lasted several months past the one-year mark. I will also admit that my sentiment that led me to hold this grudge, while not entirely misplaced when I originally had it, is a bit outdated.

The reason I developed the grudge in the first place was that I really liked these games, and wanted to see them get longer windows of postrelease content support. It didn't really turn into a more genuine issue until Skyrim, which is when Bethesda started getting noticeably sloppier with their QA (particularly in the area of patches that caused nearly as many new bugs as they fixed); there were still a lot of bugs that needed addressing by the time they cut off support with Patch 1.9. And as I said before, on the content side the standard cutoff window became more egregious in Fallout 4 with the existence of the DLC Season Pass.

However, the Creation Club (and whatever retooled version of it they plan to use going forward), for better or worse, has changed their MO. Even with it's flaws, the CC gave me pretty much what I asked for: extra content for games I've sunk thousands of hours into. And even though their QA's still sloppy enough that their patches need patches, they have occasionally gone back and fixed old bugs (like Skyrim's missing wolf howls that one of the early official patches broke).

You forgot that they randomly released an update for Skyrim last year to break 10 years of mods.

jk, i don't think it broke all of them.

Trust me I didn't forget, I was there lol (actually I think I had the foresight to take my XB offline just before the patch so I could keep playing until they fixed it about a week later).

Every patch that came after the CC's initial release I counted as separate (and as you alluded to, Bethesda's reputation of releasing sloppy patches has only gotten worse since then, unfortunately).

It broke any of them that used the internal database. Basically the only thing it didn't affect was post processing mods.

Anyway I think that's unlikely to happen again. The new game is probably going to be built using lessons learned from the mistakes they made with Skyrim so they don't have to retool the whole database to support the creation club update.
