What on earth did I just watch?

the series finale of Seinfeld?

I believe its gotten unfavorable reviews overall, but I'm in the minority that enjoyed it and found it a fitting finale.

Yeah I enjoy the finale too. It's a bit like a "best of" and a good sendoff to the series imo.

I can appreciate it for what it is, I suppose.

but Im very glad I wasnt watching this live with the rest of the nation

yeah, it wasn't good. kinda left me feeling empty, and bit just because the show was over

I'm OK with them finally getting their comeuppance, but the execution of it was super flawed.

Edit - my favorite thing about the finale though is how it's addressed in Curb multiple times, and Larry David still defends it while acknowledging everyone else hates it

It kind of sucks but at least because of the format of Seinfeld you can just kinda ignore it exists.

Unlike something like how I met your mother which I have not watched a single episode of since I watched the finale like a decade ago

while i also haven't revisited HIMYM, i think the last 2 minutes of the finale are the true miserable part, and that the rest of it still mostly works. the show's overall dropoff in quality starting with S5 and the entire barney-robin romance i think is more severe of an issue

Nah, the last 2 minutes were hilarious because of how bad they were. The actual bad part was over the course of one episode reversesing seasons worth of character growth by barney AND THEN SUDDENLY UNREVERSING IT BECAUSE BABY?!? Not to mention Lilly and marshal suddenly having a downer ending? And the mom randomly dying?

I seriously thought it was going to be a fake out none of this really happened because of how ridiculous it was. It was game of thrones finale before game of thrones

whether or not you like the direction and execution, all of those things were foreshadowed and how the show was clearly heading. (the mother being dead was particularly foreshadowed in a S8 episode.) it's not the finale's "fault" that those things happened, though maybe it's the showrunners' fault for structuring the final season the way they did and not giving as much time to what was incoming

Yeah the mother part was honestly the most acceptable. The barney and Marshal stuff seemed both completely out of left field and unnecessary

Barney/Robin breaking up in the finale after spending like 3 full seasons on their romance was garbage

i mean spending 6 seasons on their romance (it starts in S4, right?) is the issue there, not the conclusion, which actually seems fairly obvious. and barney's backsliding behavior when they break up is predictable - in fact we see him doing exactly that the first time he and robin break up, only the show celebrated it then

like yeah the second half of HIMYM sucked but it's not really on the finale. it was just calling the checks the other seasons already wrote

HIMYM sucks because Ted is insufferable

i also hate Lily but i think thats more of a problem with the actress than the character

There are ways you could have done this, but solidifying his commitment to Robin, going back to a sleeze ball, AND THEN REFORMING AGAIN all in the space of I think the final 2 episodes makes the end of game of thrones look glacially paced.

It was just completely asinine.

The Seinfeld finale never bothered me. It was their way of ending the show before they ran out of good material, and that's kinda the point of the episode.

After more time reflecting, I can appreciate the finale for what it is thematically.

But the parade of witnesses at the trial definitely dragged for twice, three times as long as it needed to. Its one thing for a comedy show to have a decidedly not-as-funny final episode. Its another for that show to end on a semi-masturbatory noteespecially right after a clipshow.
