Pokmon that was mass produced goes for $100-300 from the original gameboy games to the gba ones. These shouldnt have such a high asking price. Most gba games are $100 now too. Even snes games can be in the $250-500 range.

There's a big scam going on between a ratings company and an auction company that's been drastically inflating retro game prices for a couple of years now.

EDIT: Here's a deep dive on the scam if you're curious:

I saw that. Sadly its spread to people on eBay, Facebook groups, and even used game stores.

Im confused why anyone is putting any stock into game grading. Card grading has its own issues, but it at least has decades of buildup. Encapsulating games is in the same manner is just a super new fad.

A sealed NES cart is just going to have the battery leaked out all over the innards by now.
Something about this reeks of money laundering.

In the next 3-4 years you'll be able to get Switch games on the cheap. And then a few years after that they'll spike up. Happens every time.

It's a little funny in the gen 2 pokemon games' case because those cartridges are actually unplayable in their state now unless you buy a replacement battery for them too.

I just want a select handful of games from my childhood to display, but can't justify these prices.

Then finding out there is a huge market for reproduction carts and I have to research how to spot one is ridiculous.

Nobody is buying sealed games to open them, so the complete sealed item itself is a collector's item. People spending hundreds on games they mean to play is weird, though.

Last gen is old, everything before that is "retro" with prices that reflect that. PS360Wii Era games are starting to up in price.

Thank God for flash carts/ODEs. Being a collector is one thing but some of us just want to play the games.

Nothing wrong with repros, so long as everyone involved is honest about it.

But if you're just displaying them then who cares if it's a repo or not?

If you don't buy sealed games, I wouldn't worry too much about being scammed unless you are trying to buy a $100+ loose game. Lots of fake, Chinese made Pokemon carts out there.

If you want a cheap platform to collect for get a NES collection. There are a few good games that command a high price, but it's not anywhere NEAR as bad as SNES or GameCube. I would guess 90% of the games worth playing go for under $20 or so.

Genesis is pretty cheap to collect for, as well. Or at least that's what I've been told.

My brother has probably 70 sealed NES games. Years ago we were at a little hole in the wall gas station that might get half a dozen customers a day and it looked like it was straight out of the 80s inside. They had a shelf of NES games that I guess were never actually rented out back in the day. He went in and made them a low offer on all of them and got them all.

I keep telling him to get them graded so he knows what he actually has.

It's crazy cause ebay abused those prices and now even used game stores use ebay as a reference.

Complete with the box? If its the lose copy that's insane as I checked the website of my local used Videogame shop and they sell lose game boy Pokemon games for 45/50 bucks. Yet I know which the box and all the booklets the price is much much higher. 800 still seems a bot insane though

A copy of Link to the Past SNES sold last night for over $600. It appeared as brand new because some of the shrink wrap was still on the case, but the contents inside were the same conditions of other copies that sold for $200 or less. The funny part is the game had a sticker from babbages for $50 back when they bought it lol.

Yeah I saw a copy of Castlevania Symphony of the Night sell for two hundred fifty bucks sealed and with a store's 9.99 reduced price tag still on it.

An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I personally was never into collecting things that weren't meant to be collected, if that makes sense. Things like toys and video games.

Cards, sure, because the intent was to collect sets and that's really all you could do with them.
