If a Plaintiff's lawyer ever made an argument this frivolous and ridiculous, they'd be tarred and feathered as an example for future generations and whatever law they sued under would be repealed.

I completely understand the need for affordable, government subsidized, "rent controlled" housing, but other than that, shouldn't the market dictate the rent of private properties?

Yes, there are about 60000 vacant homes in SF metropolitan area and around 90000 vacant homes in LA.

I dont think they want to implement rent control, this is about building houses that are inherently less expensive

Owners looking to profit keep them vacant, off the market, to speculate on the increase in property value and only return them to the market when the rents are high enough for them to make a killing.

Are you not aware that a lot of apartments have strict income requirements for new tenants?

I was looking for a new apartment last year. It absolutely did not matter that I was paying $1,250 for my apartment at the time (after multiple rent increases over years of living there), pretty much every apartment refused to rent to me because I didn't make triple the rent. Say I found a nice place for $950? Because my gross income was only about 2,500/month, they wouldn't approve me. Didn't matter that I was paying more already. Didn't matter that it was a smarter financial decision. The door was repeatedly slammed in my face.

I ended up finding an apartment that only required I make double the rent... unfortunately, the rent is $1,100 so a huge chunk of my money goes towards that. I can't afford a car. Since I can't afford a car, I can't get a better job (trust me, I've tried; I've had promising interviews outright canceled once they found out I didn't have my own vehicle). I have to pay out the ass to have everything delivered because the nearest grocery store would be an hour round trip to walk (so, good luck with anything refrigerated or frozen). I also live in constant fear that my rent is going to go up to an unaffordable level next year because I can't afford to move again.

Rent has absolutely gotten out of control in this country.

Huntington Beach is the Florida of California, so no surprise they're doing something dumb.

OK. I get it now. So it's basically the fact that they own so much property that they can turn a profit even when they keep a lot of their "stock" off the market, causing an artificial demand.

There's a reason you see so many homeless people in urban populated area all around the country. It's the increase cost of living and being priced out of the housing market by greedy landlords/owners selling out to corporate real estates, property managements, hedge funds etc. They go in buy out the entire market, drive up the market, and create a scarcity with no affordable alternatives. It pushes people to homelessness.

As someone who lives in Orange County, CA, Huntington Beach and south county are pretty big blemishes
