ive been told to play it for years
"yusiko you need to play gears i mean you are a xenosaga fan and its so much better than saga"

and now that ive played it do i think its better than xenosaga? well its better than xenosaga episode 2 at least but overall saga is better

i liked the story in gears. it was a bit slow to start but when fei and elly fought in their gears when she took SCI FI steriods that made her go through mega roid rage i finally got invested.

but i hated the dungeons
xenogears has some of the worst dungeons in any jrpg ive played and ive played a lot
so many long corridors that all look alike and are super easy to get lost in
and just not that visually interesting

next im gonna start xenoblade

Oh yeah, that part was genuinely terrible lol, still a good game tho

Enter Babel a man, leave a little boy -- people hate that one, haha. The trick is to fight a battle before you do any platforming to minimize the risk of something going awry and falling down a floor(s).

It's cult "amazingness" has been highly over-inflated by nostalgia and selective memories. The game is an unfinished mess on the 2nd disc. Square didn't get to completely finish what the project they started. They had to rush the 2nd half of the game to push deadlines. I can't remember if it was over pushy management, company merger, financing...all I remember hearing at the time was the devs didn't have enough time and it shows.

The game has a ton of great science fiction and RPG elements blending well in the first half (some game critics compared it to Chrono Trigger), but the choppy production into the 2nd disc aged horribly. Some of the cult worship over Xenogears are just nostalgic fans of the theme who wished the title got a proper continuation instead of Xenosaga (which just continued the tradition of crappy production).

It could have been great, but a lack of time and support killed it. From what I've heard, this is not an uncommon story for Japanese sourced titles with intricate lore and play systems. Sometimes the heads just want the product done NOW or the company faces issues before completion.

it was really only episode 2 that got hurt by crappy production
episode 3 was amazing and stuck the landing

im glad monolith soft finally got the recognition they deserved with xenoblades success even if the screen shots of xenoblade 2 ive seen show it as overly horny

Yeah I went through the xeno games like 6 years back. Mixed feelings on them, overall they're an interesting idea that were never fully realized. I don't regret playing them, they were worth a one time experience.

But it wasn't until I finally played Xenoblade that I fell in love. Xenoblade felt like the culmination of everything they were trying to do in gears and saga, finally a long, complete and self contained game with some surprising homages to the previous 4 games.

It is interesting, I wonder what it was like playing xenosaga first? While playing xenogears did you recognize things you saw in xenosaga. Because when I played xenosaga, the beginning and end of episode 3 especially was overt with xenogears callbacks

it was certainly interesting to see references from gears in general like the character hammer
though saga didnt take its hammer character in the same direction as gears hammer went
i remember at one point i literally said out loud fuck hammer when playing gears
saga hammer is a precious baby boy that needs love and protection!

i knew mai from episode 3 was a gears reference so getting maria was interesting
and one of episode 3s uberbosses is literally just weltell
