no agitator. my girlfriend hates the one we currently have so an agitator would be a dealbreaker

i personally couldnt care less. to me it just looks like a pole that takes up space. i have no idea what it does better or worse than non-agitators other than the home depot lady mentioned NOT having an agitator is better for comforters and big thick blankets like that

Agitators do next to nothing in modern HE washers due to the wash action and one-piece design. It does help to keep clothes off the center, though.

Just got a washer and dryer. Multiple sales people I talked to told me Samsung sucks and they keep getting warranty claims from their machines. However, personally I know a few people that have them and have not yet had issues.

It's a bit overkill for me personally pricewise but if you have the money sure why not.

No one I talked to could specify pros or cons between having an agitator or not. They said the agitator maybe gets things more soiled cleaner at the expense of reduced lifespan of the clothes (due to the agitation). But they all said it was a personal preference more than anything.

That seems too good to be true but they're worth looking into. Space isn't an issue but not having to move from washer to dryer would be a nice feature

Is being on the center bad?

Good to know. Yeah reviews look like they're either great or had to be fixed but eventually worked. Costco at 4.2/5 is actually the lowest I've seen when googling around. It's 4.6 at best buy, 4.5 at home depot, 4.7 at something called gerhardappliances, and 4.3 at lowes. And a chunk of the bad reviews on costco look like they are related to costco, not the product itself.

More weight on the center causes more stress on the tub bearing, so it will wear out more.

Traditional agitators pull clothes down onto the wash plate from the top of the water. HE wash plates force clothes away from the center on top of the water.

Does that effectively shorten the lifespan if the bearing gives way sooner? These days, I'd be shocked if that would actually happen. Is the workaround just to do lighter loads or what?

When it happened with mom and dad's previous washer, the tech mentioned replacing the whole washer instead of the bearing. I don't remember the reasons. Ultimately, if you want to skip the agitator, then go for it.

How long did they have that washer for?

I don't want to buy something without an agitator if something as simple as being on the center causes so much stress that we have to get a new one in a few years.

About 7 years. If you go the agitator route, don't get an LG. Their agitator design does not move clothes around at all.

shit man google says average span is 10-13 years... might have to convince my girlfriend to go agitator. noted on the LG though

i dont think she necessarily hates it, but it does seem to take up space, and the top keeps popping off the one we have after each load so it's just a little silly to pop it back into place every time after moving stuff to the dryer.

it could be your parents' one was just older though -- im still just baffled at why anyone would go NO agitator if something as simple as, what, using the machine and putting weight on the bearings, is enough to cut its lifespan short. that makes no sense to me

Top v front isn't a preference for either of us. Our current setup is top-load wash / front-load dry. I see the pros and cons of both.

Shorter people have trouble with top loaders, having to reach all the way in can be a strain on the back. Front loader also is easier to just drag clothes out into the hamper vs. reaching and dropping multiple times.

There are probably more.

At the time, there were a lot of us living at the house, so the washer was used quite a lot. It was an old Kenmore HE washer.

As for top vs. front load, front load washers are gentler on clothes and use less water. It is indeed easier to get clothes in and out. However, cycle times tend to be longer by default. Top loaders are more aggressive with cleaning and have shorter cycle times.

OP Ive heard nothing but horror stories about Costco appliance delivery. They use a third party that sucks.

If you want a good delivery experience you want to use a small local appliance store. They will be more expensive though. But they usually have their own technicians to help if there are problems after. Sometimes their model numbers are slightly different; if so they generally have better parts.

damn RIP - when was this? like did they buy it three years ago and then it just died, or did they buy it like 15 years ago and it died 12 years ago?

asking because if it's the latter then maybe they've improved, but if it's the former then that's very recent and very damning

That's unfortunate. I have a samsung phone, TV, and soundbar (which aren't exactly "appliances") so it would be funny to continue to grow in the samsung family by adding a washer/dryer.

I still might depending on what else is out there. Something does feel off about getting something like a samsung/LG instead of the common W/D specialists like maytag/whirlpool/etc

There is something to be said about that. All the wifi connectivity / smart stuff seems way unnecessary. Like ok cool my phone will notify me when my load is done, is that really worth risking a fat short?

To be fair it was awhile ago. I'd say like 7-8 years ago.

Still enough to make me look elsewhere though if I was in the market for a washer though.

Ya I'm still shopping, it's good to know. 7-8 years is a long time in the "tech" world but I'm not so sure that applies to appliances, can a W/D really change that much in 7-8 years aside from the "smart" garbage
