Scientists say they have created mice with two fathers by producing eggs from male cells, in research that has the potential to open up radical developments for human reproduction.
The technique could pave the way to allowing two men to have children related to both fathers, and could also treat a type of infertility in women.
However, scientists said much more research would need to be done and ethical considerations made before this would be considered in humans.
Prof Katsuhiko Hayashi from Osaka University presented his findings - which are not yet published - to the International Summit on Human Genome Editing at the Francis Crick Institute in London.
The research involved creating a stem cell from a skin cell of a male mouse, and then deleting the Y chromosome and duplicating the X chromosome, allowing it to turn into an egg.
Just seven pups were born from 600 attempted implants. But these pups went on to live healthy lives, and have offspring of their own.
It is not the first time similar attempts have been made.
In 2018, scientists at the Chinese Academy of Science successfully bred mice from two fathers, but the pups were unhealthy and died after a short time.
Prof Hayashi, a world-renowned expert in the field, told the summit that he is working on developing fertility treatments.
He believes his work could potentially be available for humans in ten years.
"If people want it and if society accepts such a technology then yes, I'm for it, he told the BBC.
But he added: "Even in mice there are many problems in the quality of the egg. So before we can think of it as a fertility treatment we have to overcome these problems, which could take a long long time.

That's pretty incredible. But I guess there's no reason why it would be impossible to safely do this for people too, eventually.

Also what they actually did suggests it might even be possible to create a mouse with only 1 father and.... That's it. A literal single parent.

Well, "why are they researching it?" could be because it's a thing they would like to be an option for humans, or just for the sake of proving it is possible, or for money or fame.

"Why does it get funding?" is definitely because there are a fair number of gay couples who would like to have a child who is biologically both of theirs.

Seems like that would be a nightmare for genetic disorders.

Various species already do this and it seems to work for them. But I def don't think we should give wild mice that capability.

It totally would be. Tech is still a long ways away from being marketed to humans though. Maybe by the time it's in vogue we'll have a way to filter out genetic disorders and go full gattaca

I always thought that a big advantage of gay couples was that they'd be able to adopt the kids that didn't have parents. Kinda like nature balancing itself out a bit. I mean shoot, I was engaged to a girl who was apparently infertile, and we said we'd rather adopt than try anything else. Just made sense.

It's actually really difficult for gay couples to adopt a child. Most agencies are religious and definitely do discriminate. In this case both fathers would have a claim over the child there wouldn't be any mistakes about whos parent was who's to the kid.

Oh boy Republicans will be livid when they hear about this.

The ovum is a tiny bit of genetic bits, and then an asston of goo meant to sustain a blastocele until it implants.
There's no reason why the genetic bits can't be replaced with the genetic bits from a sperm.

Gay parents?

Conservatives are going to try to ban this once it becomes available for human couples.

Can't wait to hear what Ben Shapiro has to say about this.
