Damn you, porn industry. You denied us better quality home theatre options in the 80s and 90s.

Though if you look into why VHS actually won, it makes sense. Betamax was better tech, but not as convenient, cheap, and marketable.

The last known laserdisc title is Onta Station vol. 1018, a karaoke disc released on March 21, 2007.

Existential doubt: the audio-visual format.

It's a what, not a who. I was speaking figuratively, you irredeemable philistine.

A mayfly typically only survives for a day or so once it becomes an adult. Allusions to mayflies are often used to impart a reference to the ephemeral or otherwise extremely short lived.

As in, you're probably going to do whatever you did on your previous account and then the cycle will start again.

Betamax was used in TV studios into the early 2000's. I worked at a studio from 2003-2005 that used them for a lot of B-Roll footage

Daamn. I expected the difference to be larger tbh.

Did betamax have anything else going for it? Like better sound or colors?

Also I think it's funny that sometimes someone will post that they think 1920 x 1080 looks similar or the same as 3840 x 2160. Which is a larger diff than the betamax vs vhs thing.

A couple of things I pulled quickly from Google:

Experts say that some of the technical advantages of Betamax over VHS were that the picture was sharper, the tape-winding mechanism switched quickly between modes, cassettes were small enough to be easily portable, and that sound tracks were better for duplication.

Sony had a reputation to maintain in terms of quality, and Betamax devices were much higher quality than VHS players. Not to mention, Betamax tapes had better audio and video quality, as well as a more stable image, resulting in a more enjoyable watching experience.

I also see that the TV broadcast standard was Betacam, not Betamax. Betamax was the commercial/home use standard, while Betacam was the industry standard
