When typical tipping culture says it should be 140 on a 700 meal, and you miss out on possibly a second table, then no, it isn't good. In that time, assuming everything went right that person could have easily made 200 dollars.

Terrible hourly wages, but they make it up with tips. Hence why servers in America get pissed off when people tip less than the typical amount. It's kind of the same here in Canada, but less barbaric. But servers do make bank when the hockey playoffs are running.

The whole point of them being allowed to be paid below minimum wage is because they get tipped. So being tipped should count as being part of their hourly wage even if they don't report it to the IRS.

but you're acting like they make that much consistently every hour, every day. that just isn't true at all. there could be slow days where she doesn't even make 100 all day.

Servers typically pay out percentages of their total sales at the end of the night to bartenders/hosts/kitchen/the house/etc. The percentages and cuts can vary depending on the establishment. When the payout to others is calculated it's done on the $700 sale. Not the $70 tip.

If you're not prepared to tip, don't eat out. If you eat out anyway and don't tip, don't be surprised when you find a couple pubes sprinkled on your chocolate lava cake.

It's not even a question of 'if'. It's a zero sum game. If you live in America and don't tip, don't eat at restaurants (unless you're cool with a little extra DNA in your soup).

Using the federal minimum wage as the baseline.
A Walmart cashier working 40 hours would make 290/week before taxes.
This waitresses employer would be required and forced to pay her 290/week for 40 worked.
Regardless of the state you live in, this applies to each state. That waitresses employer is required to pay her whatever the minimum wage is in her state if wages are insufficient to make up the difference.

Top that with the fact WITH tips they can make more than minimum wage, and that same entitlement seems to magically dissappear for "customarily" non tipped minimum wage jobs when these same waitresses shop elsewhere.

This misconception that waitresses are paid less is just not remotely accurate. Yet it's continuously peddled.

I know we all want to immediately jump on her for this... but you really should try to at least understand the traditions and customs of the culture you are traveling to abide by. Those Europeans are really acting like how people say Americans behave internationally.

I don't know what HOURS is, but even if it was 3 hours that was 23 per hour and if it was 4 about 18 an hour. That's not too bad for hourly pay.

As someone who worked several years at several restaurants I can assure you that no that is not the norm. The worst that happens is the servers talk shit about you after you leave.

There are literally no legal waitress/server jobs that are allowed to pay lower than the state minimum wage if tips are short.

For example, the local grocery store cashier who is required to be paid 7.25/hour..... the waitress is required to be paid that as well if tips are short.

Yet, people like you keep believing this misconception. It is literally illegal to pay less.

Nope as that's not my responsibility. It's also still not true the employer isn't federally required to pay the difference if their wage (after tips) doesn't at minimum meet minimum wage.
