This is a believe I have always held. Is there something wrong with me?
This is especially apparent in any kind of multiplayer or live-service game. There will be a concept of a metagame, but unless I enjoy that concept, I will just do whatever makes me the happiest.
I can name off many examples, but I think a lot of them will get lost in translation. For example, in Pokemon, I will create and use suboptimal teams because I like to create and find my own strategies. I think that using the strategies of others is cheating myself out of a good time.

I can only see it being a problem if it's a team based game, and it might be seen as purposely sabotaging the teams effectiveness.

This is largely why I no longer play team based games.

I get the cheating aspect. I have a very hard time using strategy guides for that reason. once i know, the feeling and skills you get when figuring something out is gone.

Yeah like when Markiplier played Undertale and people harassed him for "playing the game wrong" and spoiling things for him. It's his first time playing this game that everyone overhyped, why are you attacking him for not playing the way you want him to play?

I much prefer playing games my way, especially when it's the "wrong" way.

There are really only two cases where it's appropriate to give somebody a hard time for playing a game "wrong":

• Team games where going significantly off-meta can interfere with other people's ability to have fun (though even then, there's often still plenty of potential for off-meta play to perform just fine, if perhaps less than optimally)
• Cases where approaching the game differently is likely to make it more enjoyable for the player (though in that case, giving them a hard time isn't going to help much, because that's a time when framing it as helpful advice is more productive)

Anything else is just people gatekeeping other people's fun because they have nothing better to do with their lives.

I love this guy's channel.

This is ultimately why I dropped FFXIV where the end-game is to study a 15 minute video of a raid, then replicate all the steps perfectly while keeping your rotation up. While it was fun for a one or two raid tiers I didn't have much more interest in learning another choreographed dance.

I did think of this video on seeing this topic. There is definitely room for "you're playing it wrong" to be a genuine effort to help the person enjoy the game more, even if more often than not it's just a bunch of pointless, pretentious gatekeeping.
