Same reason anyone buys a brand new flagship smartphone at launch? A combination of FOMO, bad spending habits, and overall poor self control.

You can buy the new iPhone at launch, sell it for like $50 less than what you bought it for a year later and use that to buy the next iPhone at launch.

Its a positive for consumers, at this point a 2-3 year old flagship samsung or pixel is a decent phone, just settle on one for cheap

Yeap. Thats how I got a pixel 5 for 290 a year after release. Seems like a win win for consumers having the power of a flagship for so low

The link you provided is not a good example. That's offering a phone at a subsidized price in exchange for a certain amount of months for service. Companies have been doing that for years, even with more expensive phones.

If the phone were $289 with no strings attached, then yes, that would be an insane price drop.

You can make a phone number to transfer for like $5 (cost of a SIM card), or buy one from eBay to transfer.
