Growing up, my family wasn't Catholic, but we observed Lent. Only you gave something up you enjoyed (could be meat of course) for the duration of the season. --- You know how fads are. I was raised in a Catholic family Lent is based on when Jesus was in the wilderness and had no food or water. People are supposed to give stuff up to emulate Jesus. Fish is allowed because of a story when Jesus cast that spell to make like 1 fish turn into thousands so he could feed the whole town. I think fish have always had a strong connection with Jesus Some of his disciples were fishermen. And he helped them catch fish multiple times I think ... Copied to Clipboard!

So a lot of the *specifically* Judeo Christian food restrictions (no pork, no shellfish, etc) reflect back to specifically animals that were prone to parasites. Frankly, lots of Old Testament "laws" were just basic public health safety couched in religion to give them weight enough that people would actually follow them. --- Call me Bolt ...
