Agreed with TC. Yoshi's Island was a masterpiece, but they went in a completely different direction with Yoshi's Story, and for better or for worse, it's Story that defined Yoshi's character going forward (I read it's because Japan sees Story as more of the defining game for Yoshi, as opposed to the West in which it's Island).

Woolly World was pretty good, though. The rest of the games... Yeah, mediocre at best.

I think Yoshi's Island is the true start of the Yoshi series. Just like how I'm sure Super Mario Bros. would be considered the true start of the Mario series, and not Donkey Kong or Mario Bros. Arcade. It's nebulous.

I've played and beat all except the Topsy Turvy game, and yeah I think second best would be Woolly's World. I remember being stoked for Yoshi's Island DS when it was announced, but it did not live to the hype.

Good point on Yoshi's Island. It's crazy how they never recaptured the charm of the 1st game despite making like 4? more games.

Where did you read this? I'm trying too google things like "Japan liked Yoshis Story" and can't find anything.

Meanwhile on topic, I'd say Ace Attorney. I love all the sequels, but they hit the format so right the first time and the music and characters haven't really been topped. All the additional mechanics later games have added have been hit or miss; some of them have been good but the core gameplay is still the best part.

The vast majority of the fanbase think it peaked at 3 or AAI2, occasionally 6 and GAA2. 1 is honestly rather mid in comparison and it's mainly the nostalgia value of introducing the iconic formula that gets it remembered, not that the game itself is peak.
