I guess I could have just said I like following movie industry analysts on YT, although as I have mentioned in other topics the main analysis channel I got most of my news from between 2016-2020 turned out to be in with the alt right and I'm still bitter about it. I unsubscribed from them in 2020 due to them continually pushing a narrative that Lucasfilm was stuck in a "civil war" between so-called Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas factions even though everyone in the company answers directly to Kennedy and she has the power to can anyone who opposes her on the spot so there's no need for such a thing, but I've been tempted to check in on it every now and then since and they've just descended further down the alt-right rabbit hole in that time.

Finally saw it last night.

It's a fun, mindless movie that had me smiling the whole time. Toad stole the show whenever he got screen time. Suicidal Luma was hilarious.

Sadly, I didn't stick around for the final post-credits scene. Would've loved to see the Yoshi tease.

Maybe film critics forgot how to enjoy movies? I saw Bullet Train last week and found it pretty enjoyable, but it has an RT score in the low 50s.

I was so overwhelmed by nostalgia I was borderline in tears by the time the credits hit

Can confirm that Bullet Train was a great time. But I love quick movies like that with a lot of moving parts.

I mean, slightly more than half of critics liked Bullet Train. Personally I was in the middle of it. The early parts are a lot of fun but the third act derails (pun intended) into a CG mess.

Similarly most critics did give Mario a positive review.

Okay yeah, that's fair. I remember there was a time where I felt like professional critics kept hyping up every big blockbuster movie as the second coming, and then I'd just find them to be okay to decent.

Finally got around to watching it with a friend. It was a fun film with a great art style evocative of the games. It really is a crowd pleaser. Hope we'll get a follow up either in the form of a sequel or another Nintendo movie.

But yeah Cranky's voice is lame.

The Mario movie is making big $$$. A sequel is all but confirmed.

Its making so much Id be surprised if Nintendo didnt consider having movies made for some of their other characters too

I don't know that anything will make anywhere near the money of a Mario movie and they know it, so I'd expect to see cameos in Mario movies, at least for now.

I think a straightforward Pokmon movie adapting Red and Blue (or any mainline game really) could make that mind of money but thats a concept better suited for television.

Finally saw the movie tonight. I thought it was cute and fun. A lot of laughs and a TON of in-jokes and references for the fans. I thought it started out a bit meh but by the time they got to the Mushroom Kingdom, contrary to the OP, I pretty much forgot I was watching an Illumination film. Overall I'm really glad I saw it and will probably watch it again someday and would go see a sequel.

A kid in the audience cried when Bowser kidnapped Luigi and screamed in absolute terror during the Rainbow Road scene.

Yep, it's now cracked the all-time top 50 and I'd venture to say it'll crack the top 40 by the time its run is done.

Just saw it and enjoyed it. Lots of easter eggs and it was fairly funny too.
