Like holy freaking shit, the card effects in this game are insane now. I played more than a decade ago where most cards only had a line or two of writing. Now one card could be a mini-game in itself.

So anyway I bought a couple of hundred cards for collection and sleeved the rarest ones. Now I want to make a deck to play with. Bought two pre-made custom decks I have sleeved for playing, but wanted to know a few things.

  • How do I know what card is from where? When I look online there are different types of versions for each card. Like one card is from a different bundle whilst another is from an earlier one. Nothing on the card indicates this and all their codes are the same.
  • Why is rarity so hard to understand?
  • How do I go about making my own deck? I was thinking of seperating trap cards, monster cards, spell cards ect, but realized a lot of these cards have effects that go together now. And I don't even know where to begin in finding out where each goes in terms of usefulness
  • I saw the new pendulum, xyz, link cards and I gotta look at youtube videos for these. There's something called extra decks now and geez. There's also a different type of star system?

If you have to start from there, you most likely never actually played YGO, since it wasn't really required to know the rules to have fun with it

You should start from Master Duel first and foremost. The key is to not be overwhelmed and rely a bit on the auto-simulator and press a bunch of buttons, just accept you'll make mistakes or get rolled over.

For IRL, you should probably make friends. Usually tcgplayer.com is great for figuring out how to make a deck

Yugipedia is the best resource for this kind of info, imo. Of course, there's also Konami's official database.

Yugioh mostly seperates its decks into name-based archetypes. (ie Swordsoul, Spright, Traptrix, etc). So a simple way is to find an archetype that seems to have a playstyle that interests you, and try to build around those cards. There are plenty of decklists online if you need help getting started.

There are also some decks based on monster type, (like Dragons, or Zombies), where the idea is to just mash a bunch of the best generic type support together.

The Extra Deck is just the new name for the Fusion Deck. "new star system"...sort of? Xyz monsters have "rank" instead of a "level", and Link monsters have a "link rating". Most monsters still have the regular star levels.

I've only dabble back in the day, I wasn't a hardcore player at all so you're probably right.

Ah, that makes sense! I should have realized the naming convention, as they used to do that before >_>

I see. Fusion monsters mostly being used in the extra deck now. It threw me off at first.

Yeah they renamed it because they started adding new monster types and it didn't make sense to call it a "fusion deck" anymore lol. They also added a 15-card limit to it once they started printing monsters that people actually wanted to play outside of Metamorphasis/CyberStein degeneracy. >_>

also, decks now have a strick 60-card maximum these days. But that's because some trolls took a 2000-card deck to a tournament one time lmao

Try out Master Duel first. It's free to download, and the beginning of the solo mode works as a really good tutorial on the different rules and mechanics of the game. Once you get the basics down in solo mode, then you can look into building a deck and going online. I haven't played the IRL game in a long time, so I can't really help you with finding physical cards.

If we're giving out Master Duel tips, fight off the urge to immediately make a Dark Magician or other anime deck. You don't have to make a meta deck, but the problem with Dark Magician and Blue Eyes to some extent is that not only are almost all the cards SRs and URs, but the decks aren't particularly good. If you're adamant on building a jank deck, by all means, feel free. It's just that using tons of resources on relatively weak decks is gonna make it harder to build new decks faster.

Also this, it's hard to go wrong with crafting staple cards that go in every deck.

At least Dark Magician full build don't require much. It's 1500 gems cuz you just buy the 3 structures and call it a day. The other structure decks are way cooler, but DM structure is maybe top 3 in terms of strength (also you can use Illusion of Chaos and Magician's Soul in a lot of decks).

Just don't build Blue Eyes. You'll get weird wins but you'll lose 90% of your duels and learn almost nothing, other than the thought of "boy, the other decks are just too good"

Threatening to get blown off a cliff is a perfectly legitimate strategy.

Tbh just randomly drawing Exodia level hand with Blue Eyes and threatening to cliff fall one's self have pretty equal level of legitimacy

yeah definitely try out Master Duel. I would go for the Dark Magician structure deck. Easy beginning deck with some fun combos. If you don't want to go full meta you can honestly make a deck out a lot of archetypes nowadays. I've seen some really sick Elemental Heroes, Stardust Dragon, other protagonist decks, etc.. But if you really want to win, you can save up for the upcoming "Tearlament" cards that are apparently broken as fuck irl.

True Dracos and Kozmos are two decks that I would recommend for newbies in Master Duel. They're both pretty cheap to build in MD, they don't use the extra deck at all so they're simpler to learn and play, they're both decent enough decks to make it to Gold 1 and maybe a bit of the way into Platinum (you'll eventually need to build better decks for Diamond), and Kozmos in particular are also really good for grinding festival events because they're pretty much always playable no matter what the limitations of the festival are.

You could also buy two or three copies of a structure deck (the Zombie and Salamangreat ones are the best IMO) and then eventually craft staples to add. Either way, these are cheap options to use at the start until you build up the resources to make better decks and craft more staples.

Blue-Eyes can be fun to play, they're just not competetively viable lol. But depending on who you play with, they may have other casual decks to play at that level

I started off with stardust synchron deck which is very easy to play which provides negates for protection, also relatively competitive.

Another dead easy deck to play is galaxy eyes going second OTK

Yeah it's fine. Blue Eyes decks are thankfully cheap IRL. You'd definitely need to meet people willing to play casual duels, but definitely don't expect anybody to be lugging around decks for multiple situations. Definitely gotta plan ahead, maybe on the first day, try the deck out against a bunch of good decks to see how far the deck would actually need to go.

While people are definitely down to teach you the game, it is still probably faster to get a small primer in Master Duel first either way

Sorry, my advice was geared towards Master Duel. For the actual trading cards, I would honestly still try out first on an online simulator before shelling out money for a deck you might not end up liking. But if youre building cheaper decks anyways, it isnt a big deal.

One thing Yugioh has over Magic (unless youre a collector I guess) is that cards are reprinted more often, so cards tend to drop in value as they get older, so it gets cheaper over time as long as you arent trying to build meta decks.
