If you tell a well written story with well written characters its gonna work. Doesnt matter what gender or race those characters are so long as theyre believable and intriguing.

if youre just inserting a character with a certain trait to check a box chances are its shit.

If some character is in a comedy it's probably because they fit some role in the narrative. If there was a useless character people would point it out.

I *think* the mother figure would be perceived a little differently if she was placed in Joels spot. People would more likely be placed in a suspension of belief scenario if she was violently mowing through folks.

I feel theres also a double standard on a mother being a bit callous or jaded. Joel could get away with the tough and gruff old man schtick.

I would think perception to (video game) Tess would give a good indication. Obviously she believed in the mission a bit quicker, but she fit the topics premise the closest.

TWD Telltale game. Its two kids, technically.

In terminator wasn't the mother tough and jaded after awhile. We just need context as to what made them that way. Even for a male character them being like that seems stupid if there is no reason for it.
