Started yesterday, and I can only do it about 1 in 10 times. Been practicing and don't seem to get better. Do you even need to be able to do that on command?

Umm actually it only tough if I try it with the switch joy cons. Reg controller is easy tho.

It's just push the analog forward and heavy attack together
it's not very useful in any of the dark souls games I found

hold black, tap parry button
if you fail, you block some of the damage
heater shield in dark souls 1 has bonus frames
best to practice on the hollows and the dark knights

smash attack comes from smash bros where you push the stick and do the normal attack at the same time

another way to think of it is if you are using a controller pad and you basically press both the stick forward and heavy attack l2 or trigger at the same time

it does run natively at 60fps so you should not have problems if you can run at 60 fps
The good news is it's not really important or ever useful as generally it will leave you open

Haven't used them much either. Right now I just block and counter attack with a thrust and maybe a slash. Spear guys get the magic. I just got to the Gargoyles. First attempt was okay, second was a disaster. Was a playing for a bit and a little tired, so I decided to call it quits for the day.

That boss is meant to teach you something
running away to give space is a vital mechanic
a few bosses will use the entire arena so you need to move them around
in dark souls 1 if you haven't beat the boss of that specific area then every enemy you kill can drop 'soft' humanity. You can kindle a bonfire for double the flasks (for that boss the bonfire above andre the blacksmith should be kindled as it will also be used later for a new area)

You could also technically summon up to two AI summons for that boss.

i'd say that since they're almost the same input, get good at kicking first. kicks are also really useful if you can find where to slot them in.

Yeah, I kite stuff to open spaces or chocke points, so space is something I'm getting used to. Hitting walls with your swings is strange, most games you'll just swing through the wall. Dunno if I'll ever get used to the targeting system killing me.

Hit analog stick forward really fast and hit the button at the same time like it's a rhythm game. That's how I get it consistently.

There are situations where it's useful. Sometimes you have a sliver of stamina left and you need one more attack quickly. Might as well make it an attempt to bulldoze them with the jumping R2.
It's also a little faster than stepping forward and R1ing after an enemy misses but that only really matters once you're familiar with every enemy attack animation.
Edit: Put spoilers on it. This is a game where people like to go in completely blind so I'm actually not sure how much I should be telling you beyond the controls.

Yeah, I have a shield. I either scooch forward or do a trust attack. I'll try flick the stick instead of just quickly moving forward tomorrow.

K, so I'm fine with the heavy attack and beat the gargoyles. Now I'm on to New Londo... keep getting ambushed or snagged on something and getting surrounded. Only have 1 transient soul left. Think I saw one where I died. Is there a shop I'm missing that has them?

Well I ran out of curses, so I was able to get a hint to check my keys. Remembered the basement key. Went around and found the door it opened. All good again. I was a bit suspect. I was in New Londo thinking this is down, and that could be a bell tower up there. Not the best game to play stoned, you gotta remember lots of details.
