ive put off this side quest until the end. its the last one left i can do in chapter 5. so I start googling "yakuza how to play mahjong" and my googling leads me to "how to play mahjong - the movie"

and i think theres like shogi later on as well? wtf

That along with some of the karaoke songs are the one thing I refuse to do in Yakuza games. It'll always irk me I'll never get 100% completion, but I'm not learning to play an entirely different game to complete a videogame.
And some of those songs (along with the surgery in FotNS) just seem impossible to me.

Some of the RGG games label the tiles so they're easier to read.

I learned how to play Poker for Dead Rising, or at least learned stronger strategies for it since I only knew the very basics before.

Here's a super easy strat just to get you by and teach you the fundamental

Basically the hand you're usually aiming for is 4 "runs" and a pair. A "run" is either 3 of a kind or a sequence (aka 1-2-3, 5-6-7, etc.). You usually want to avoid the face tiles, which are the 4 wind tiles and the 3 dragon tiles.

You do NOT want to steal (aka perform a "Chi" or a "Pon" when the game prompts you) because that deducts points from your hand and sometimes makes it impossible to win that hand, even if you get 4 runs and a pair.

The only exception would be a "Ron", which is when you win while you're in Riichi by stealing another tile.

Riichi is an option you take when you're 1 tile away from a winning hand. When that happens, you usually click Square or something and the game auto-draws until either you draw the winning tile (called "Tsumo"), someone discards a tile you can steal to win (called "Ron") or the game is over. Most of the time you want to go into Riichi mode when you can.

That's basically it. Try to pay attention to what people discard. Like if you're aiming for 3 of a kind of the 5 bamboo and you see 2 of them discarded, that means there's only 2 available left and that would be impossible (because there's only 4 of each tile in the whole deck)

Obviously there's way more indepth stuff like prevailing wind and Hans and special hands like 7 pairs, but the strat I covered is just your easy bread and butter and will help you ease into it. You can look up all that other complicated stuff once you get comfortable with the flow of the game.

Once you learn the basics, you can usually get by Easy and Medium. Hard is just luck unless you're pretty skilled, which I'm not lol
