it's become pretty important for communication in recent years. you can't put the genie back in the bottle so the people who are cheering on the death of twitter are missing the point. like it or not, it's how people get their news now and stay up to date on people and if anyone can claim to be anyone or anything, the potential for damage is huge.

Twitter has been too good today. Prominent people are desperately trying to rid themselves of the blue checkmark that Elon keeps trying to give them for free. Supposedly they're giving every account with over a million followers a checkmark no matter what, even accounts of deceased celebrities. Meanwhile the bootlickers somehow managed to make it seem like not having a blue checkmark means you're an elitist.

"No one has a right to X" is a stupid defense of nickel-and-diming. Most people won't go broke from microtransactions or subscription price increases either, but doesn't make it less stupid. They actually solved that problem by letting people verify that they were who they were claiming to be. Twitter would then post a blue checkmark next to that person's name to show that it was the official account of that person.

Don't really know why they stopped doing that though, maybe someone can remind me.

They started charging $84 a year to be verified.

Looking at the criteria, Twitter doesn't require any sort of verification to get the blue check mark. You just pay the money and get it.

At the end of the day, no one has to use twitter.

If you're on there for financial gain, then pony up. If a blue check means something to you, pony up. No one, literally no one, has to use that service. It's not some free site sponsored by the government that we have a right to use.

I'm really glad people are melting down over being cheap. That's literally funny to me.
