'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Passes $700 Million at Global Box Office

With an impressive opening weekend and box office earnings thus far, our beloved Italian plumber has been doing nothing but exceeding expectations lately. The Super Mario Bros. Movie received mixed reviews when it debuted in theaters on April 5, with some critics saying that the film adaptation was a love letter to the games it was based on as well as a feature that everyone could hope for from a Super Mario movie. The record-breaking animated movie has continued to smash the global box office and is expected to race towards the $1 billion mark. It has grossed an estimated $92.5 million in gross earnings from 4,371 theaters in its second week of theatrical run alone, crossing a total of $700 million globally.

Based on a classic Nintendo video game, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already poised to become the highest grossing video game adaptation ever. That's especially true considering how the animated film has delivered a massive amount of earnings at the domestic and global box office, earning an estimated $87 million in its second week, even surpassing 2019's Frozen II, which accumulated a total of $86 million during its second week run in cinemas. Super Mario has grossed $353.3 million domestically and $339.8 million internationally, earning a staggering global total of $693.1 million before meeting the $700 million mark.

The Universal and Illumination's collaboration feature has indeed defied expectations and become the top-grossing film of the year so far, beating The Popes Exorcist, which is in the second spot, alongside John Wick: Chapter 4 at the third spot, and Renfield placing fourth. The animated genre has also been doing great this year, with the apparent success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Makoto Shinkai's Suzume becoming one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time, pushing Once Piece Film: Red down to the fifth place...

The movie hasn't even opened in Japan or South Korea yet.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/shigeru-miyamoto-says-there-s-no-doubt-that-we-ll-get-more-nintendo-movies/ar-AA1aaLyB

Shigeru Miyamoto Says There's "No Doubt" That We'll Get More Nintendo Movies

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a massive success for both Nintendo and Illumination. Not only is it widely adored by fans of the games, but it's also on track to make at least $1.2 billion at the global box office, making it one of the most successful animated movies of all time. It's completely smashed the previous record for a video game adaptation, leaving Warcraft and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in its dust, and was even reported as the number one film in at least 26 different countries.

Now, you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that Nintendo is probably going to be pretty confident in its movie making abilities after this success. It's expected that Nintendo will continue to adapt its properties into movies, but Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has now pretty much confirmed that in a recent interview. Speaking with Japanese outlet Nikkei (translated by My Nintendo News), Miyamoto says that there's "no doubt" that we'll be getting more movies from Nintendo in the future...

Step aside, Disney.

I took my daughter today to see it. I thoroughly enjoyed every second and it kinda brought me to tears to see a really well done and faithful adaptation of Mario on the big screen and to share that moment with my daughter made it extra special.

It was like watching my childhood on replay.

thats why the critics sound so ridiculous.

if you want an academy grade rating, its a D.

for an animated video game based movie? Its an A.

Zelda, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, Kirby, Splatoon, Animal Crossing. Those I can see making money, What I don't see doing well are Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, Pikmin, Donkey Kong and Wario. Detective Pikachu sucked but that was because it was live action and made the stupid mistake of having a pokemon actually speaking sentences.

Eh, that's being quite generous, I think.

The plot was pointless and just served to shoehorn as many fan-servicey easter eggs as possible.

My kids loved it though, which was the main thing.

Donkey Kong and Wario would be more popular than Kirby, Kid Icarus and Splatoon tbh.

Wario and Illumination is an especially good match.

Critics gave the Paw Patrol movie 80% lol.

The reason half of critics gave it a bad review is because half of critics don't care about Mario. If you don't care about Mario it's a nothing movie.

As someone who loves mario (I can count 12 pieces of mario merchandise in my immediate view in my room) it wasn't that good. It wasn't horrible or anything, but it could have had a good meaningful story AS WELL AS loads of mario references. "Oh it's a kid's film it doesn't need to be that good". Why not? Look at Into the Spiderverse, the Toy Story films, even The Lego Movie was great in it's own right. The fact you need to be a mario fan to appreciate it is a failure of the film.

We should want better than what we got.

Yeah to me it felt like the references and visuals were really good but the characterization was really poor. There's no meat to it. People act like it's an unreasonable expectation but even the Paw Patrol movie had actual consistent character arcs to it lol.

As someone who loved Into the Spiderverse I'd say most of the appeal are also mainly references. A lot of the actual plot beats without the references are rather headscratching on retrospect like why supervillain Prowler dies in one shot by Kingpin almost solely so Miles can have a "family member died" moment, Gwen being knocked into the past before the Collider even existed making no sense, why 6 superheros are getting knocked around by 4 villain from a single universe, one weak enough to be knocked out by an ordinary old woman (hell, that entire fight seems to just exist for Prowler to get a sad death since the other villains just vanish for no reason right after he dies), how May is friends with Dr Ock even though Ock is part of a crime organization that eventually killers her nephew, why Kingpin brutally decides to kill original Spiderman but then the rest of the movie kind of treats him like a joke etc.
tbh if the movie wasn't filled with Spiderman references I'd have liked it a lot less.

Spiderverse does have more plot twists and more complex characters though I suppose.

Unless you actively hate Mario, I think it's the type of movie that you can watch and think it was an enjoyable time.
