"the machine needs somebody to maintain it, so we just replaced one job with a better one!"

no you didn't. you replaced twenty entry level jobs with one job that requires a degree or certification that costs thousands of dollars minimum to obtain.

At least the creative class will get replaced by technology along with the blue collar workers.

So now everybody can be out of a job equally.

How damning an indictment of capitalism is it that we could theoretically automate every field of labor, production, industry, EVERYTHING, and instead of an idyllic utopia where everyone is free to pursue their passions, its instead a hellscape nightmare scenario where we all go homeless and starve?

Human wants and desires are literally infinite so no matter how much AI takes over we'll think of something new that people will want or need that will create new jobs as it always does.

In the near to gar future though no AI will always fully replace most service jobs so those are mostly likely.

he is right though.

the guy whose job was to nail soles at shoes in an industrial line, or the guy screwing lugs on tires at the Ford factory didnt need a degree or special skills. The people programming and maintaining those machines? You bet.

plus its not like the replacement rate is 1 to 1. A single machine nails as many shoes as dozens of workers

While true, the idea that automation creates better jobs and replaces dangerous ones, it doesn't replace jobs at a 1:1 ratio.

We've literally be seeing it for 1000 years. Everything has basically been an improvement on the assembly line, which has slowly caused more work to be done by less and less people.

That's kinda how it goes.

Automation is taking all the assembly line jobs and creating robotic manufacturing? Cool. I don't work the assembly line.
Automation is taking all the toll booth jobs and creating EZPass? Cool. I'm not a toll booth operator.
Automation is taking all the cashier jobs and creating self checkout? Cool. I'm not a cashier.

Until Automation takes YOUR job, no one cares.

what a long winded fucking way to say i was right, a multitude of entry level jobs get replaced with fewer highly skilled jobs that require expensive degrees or certifications.

Correct. So what it's doing is replacing a few hundred jobs with about 20 that require years of schooling and training.

Schooling and training that the people who's jobs are being replaced do not have an cannot afford to get.

You're basically asking the 50 year old that spent the day shift to ringing up and bagging your groceries for $12 an hour to go to technical school so they can service the self-checkout machines.

Theres still not a 1:1 replacement.

Automation is being created and improved upon to make labor cheaper, not to create a widespread net-zero result.

which is my point. You replace 100 low skilled , no education jobs with 10 STEM degree jobs. How does that help those 100 people?

But you DO need training.

Its basically the Tech version argument of Just teach the oil riggers how to do maintenance on wind turbines and tell the coal miners to just mine for lithium instead for the EV batteries.

What automation is doing is eliminating low paying, low skill jobs. Jobs that some people have no other choice but to have. Be it skill level, learning ability, or other factors.

You think its hyperbole, but telling an assembly line worker that their job was replaced by AI and they should just learn how to service the machines is the equivalent to saying Want more money? Get a better paying job!

It BS bootstrap talk.

Can you imagine Horses speaking to each other and saying "The automobile won't replace us, they'll be plenty of jobs for Horse-kind, we just need different skills"?
No, because it'd be silly and more importantly, incorrect.

Timeline:
  • The Horse population in 1910 was 27.5 Million.

  • Cars became popular in the U.S. after the introduction of the Ford Model T in 1908, and eventually after a few decades cars became affordable to the general populace.

  • By 2017, the Horse population is only at 7.2 millionand that's with a massive increase in the human population which in the 1800s required horses at a 3 humans to 1 horse ratio.

That's a drop to 26% of the population, because Horses just aren't needed anymore.

Will all human jobs disappear overnight? No, it'll be a slow process but come a few decades, only the chosen few will have jobs or be able to get jobs.
The question is not will AI destroy jobs, because it undoubtedly will, and you cannot slow progress (as was demonstrated by the Luddites in Britain)the question should be "AI will destroy jobs, and what are we going to do about it?"

the funny thing is he seems to think i'm attacking automation for what is an obvious inevitability.

I'm not. We just need to stop pretending that the same number of jobs in a field exist, and that the new ones don't have a substantially higher hurdle for new job seekers to get into than the old jobs did.

But acknowledging this means acknowledging the need to pair advances in automation, A.I., and direct consumer interfaces with a UBI, and the bootstrappers are never going to acknowledge that need.
