I don't remember him leading troops into battle? At one point he was sent on a one-man mission to hunt down/assassinate Grievous. That's underling work.

Do they say that in the movies? Not saying it's wrong if they don't, just curious if I missed it.

Many Jedi were made into generals for the Clone Wars.

On the surface it was good PR for the war effort. "The stuffy space wizards are on the front lines too!"

Hell, in the novelization of Revenge of the Sith (which is fantastic, by the way) Anakin Skywalker is a known and idolized war hero, almost like Captain America for Star Wars.

But under the surface, it was a way for Palpatine to scatter the best and brightest of the Jedi to far-flung battlefields, working with (and usually surrounded by) clone troopers at all times, the very same clone troopers programmed to unflinchingly execute them when Order 66 came down.

It's common to mishear those lines. They're actually saying "venereal". Everyone hated Jedi and referred to them as this slur. They regarded them the same as an STD. They were the herpes of the galaxy. The Jedi, being a bunch of loser virgins didn't understand what everyone was talking about

It's kind of amazing how much better the movie's story gets when it's conveyed with some background info and no weird line deliveries.

You didn't see him in charge of the attack on Grievous at Utapau?

I don't remember him being in charge of anything. He goes off on his own to have a diplomatic meeting with one of the weird people and then he goes off on his own on a giant chameleon to punch a robot in the face is what I remember and neither action seems like that of a commanding general.

But I guess he was just being a moron.

On a related note, why the fuck were Han Solo and Lando generals?

And why do generals apparently lead strike team missions and fly ships directly into combat? What does the rank of General actually mean in the SW universe?

... no, he went in first to corner grievous with a plan that his troops would come in shortly after. Which is what happened in the scene.

Imagine Revenge of the Sith as a Disney+ series.

Personally, I feel Star Wars works much better in episodic content than in movies. They skip too much stuff in the films.

There's a multi year time skip in the first trilogy between ANH and ESB, and I believe another year between ESB and RoTJ.

Then in the prequels it goes over a decade between TPM and AoTC, then another 3 years between AoTC and RoTS.

The prequel trilogy should have started with AoTC.
