What do I need to know before I start playing this game?

Backstory: I bought a Switch in March 2018 and on the first day I bought Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. I sunk a few dozen hours into Odyssey but never got around to playing Breath of the Wild. After Tears of the Kingdom was announced I kept telling myself I would finally get around to playing it but it wasn't until the recent trailer dropped that I decided it's time.

I have no idea what to expect. I know climbing mountains is annoying after seeing my sister play it but that's about it.

I'm having so much fun. I've played a lot more than I thought I would so far and I've already gotten the first four shrines complete. The only thing I don't like about these shrines is how there are no enemies inside them to defeat but I'm guessing that changes after beating the beginner ones. I was supposed to get my glider but the old man told me to find him where all the shrines meet which I'm guessing is the Temple of Time.

I love exploring in this game. I don't remember the last time I had this much fun just running around but it's been a while. Am I the villain? I keep disturbing these goblin guys and they attack me but I'm kind of in their territory.

Climbing isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. The stamina bar isn't as annoying as I'd thought and tbh this doesn't feel like the type of game where I need to be running around anyway. I prefer not fast travelling in games to begin with & just enjoy the scenery.

I had to take a break so I could work on my programming but I'm going to play a bit more before going to sleep.

I'm picking up everything. I felt kind of dumb because I was picking up all these mushrooms with special powers and burning them. I thought the text meant cook them in the fire, not cook them with meat or fish.

That's what I've been doing so far. And thanks for the tip about killing fish with bows. I would have assumed I needed a fishing pole and would have run around everywhere. Trying not to use a guide and just figure things out along the way.

I needed the fish too in order to make the old man his meal. At first I tried running to the third shrine and all of a sudden I started losing HP due to the extreme weather and I had to get out fast. Found some spicy peppers along the way and after leaving the mountain I found the old man near his house and read his diary. Took me a while to figure out how to get close enough to the boar to get meat but eventually figured it out. Now I got a warm jacket.

If you see something that looks out of place, try to interact with it.
If it is a stone, lift it.
If it is a hole in the ground with a stone next to it, move the stone into it.
If there is an almost complete ring, look in the direction where the hole is for a rock and complete it.
If it is a stone ring in water, throw a nearby rock into it.
Etc.

The platform at the beginning of the game would be a perfect demo disc level in the early 90s/2000s. Not overly huge, but wide enough that you can explore and really experiment with how the game works.

How long will horses stay put? I need to go somewhere but Im afraid of losing my boy.

And should I talk to Impa now or wait until Im stronger? Im not exactly sure why she told me to only talk to her when Im ready. Right now Im focused on doing shrines to build stamina and some hearts. The water one by the stables where the bard is playing Eponas Song took me 30 minutes to complete.

Yeah I was trying to catch my bearings to see where I was actually trying to go since I had seen a shrine off in the distance from a tower.

Turned out it was a lie since that shrine was actually closer to the other tower in the same area somewhat.

One more shrine and I can increase my stamina some more. Then I might get another heart. I don't normally die from enemies but every once in a while I'll get one shotted, like from those stupid laser guys.

My favorite weapon so far it the magnet thing. It's a lot of fun.

Climbed another tower and this Zora guy wants me to meet his prince so I'll start this next shrine and then see if I can find him.

The distance has been throwing me off in some parts. Sometimes I think I'll be close to something when in reality I'm quite far.

That's the easiest one out of the 4. Well I assume so since I still have two to go. I did the supposedly hardest one second.

I had pinned the distance to close so I wasn't going in the correct direction distance wise. It worked out anyway since it led to the area I was looking for in the first place.

What's the best way to get arrows? Right now I'm just running around killing goblins and I get a decent amount each time I find some. I'm hoping to get 100 so that I can do that deer hunting mini game.

What's a good early stage armor? Something that helps prevent me getting killed easily.

And should I buy that house early on? It's 3,000 rupees. I can make the money I just need arrows.

Okay good. I went back to Kakakiro Village and finished talking to Impa. Then she sent me on a quest to Hateno Village to speak to those guys in the lab. I was able to set a portal in front of the lab after I finished upgrading my state. Is it possible to do that for other towns? Getting back to places like Zora's Domain seems like a pain.

Yes. It's a free full heal + you can store 3 weapons, three shields and three arrows and once you start coming across good stuff, it comes in handy. It is totally worth the investment. Every stable, buy the arrows from Beadle. Enemies shoot arrows, if they don't hit you, you can collect them. With proper fighting and exploring, you'll eventually get a fuck you amount.

Best early stage is stealth you buy at Kakarko, and also try to seek out the climbing gear (your climbing speed increases) You always want to find a full set, and once you upgrade it twice, most armors will give you additional benefits. Just as an example, if you upgrade the stealth armor twice, at night, you move much faster. Treat this game like a turnbased RPG, prepare. Plan. If something seems frustrating, come back with proper equipment. The armor Impa gives you during the start of the memory quest serves as solid armor, it really ramps up in defense quickly but it is harder to upgrade. Get a hammer, pay attention to the spawn points and seek out ores. Ores is how you make money, money is good, cause money gets you armor, upgrades. Do not stress out about doing every quest, as far as I know, there are no missable ones. Try to seek out the ancient lab and follow that quest line so you can fully upgrade your Shekiah Slate. Do not stress out about weapons breaking, you will pick up so much, and as long as you experiment, you're good.

Every single town and stable has a shrine you can warp to, seek those first when discovering a town. Don't sweat doing the divine beasts. Get strong and discover shrines first, that's in my opinion the best way to play.

Vague spoilers: For Story reasons, you need 14 hearts, and no, you cannot cook and boost them. The additional hearts from that do not count. A lot of players say focus on stamina first, but I disagree. You can cook and prepare a lot of stamina replinishing elixers and dishes, and even extend your wheel seamlessly. It makes more sense to upgrade Stamina once, seek out the climbing gear, and then spend the rest of the shrines upgrading the hearts.

Eventide Island treasure chest glitch. You probably can't do that right now though due to needing to beat it first. The other way is to do this but you can get hit doing it.

I was able to get the money from exploring and finding enough arrows to kill deer and selling their meat skewers. Now I got myself a house and I had just enough money to buy a bed. Now I'm going to head back to Kakariko Village and see how much the stealth gear is so I can start saving up for that. I'm not sure where the climbing gear is but I'll look into that.

I almost have two full wheels of stamina which I feel is enough for now. I have 4 hearts but I'll start focusing on getting more.

@AirFresh after I get my gear I'll start doing even more exploring. I feel kind of naked just running around in my Zora uniform and other weakling clothes. How difficult is the climbing gear shrine? It says a major test of strength when I entered. Right before I did a modest test of strength and I beat the boss pretty easily. But major test sounds scary and I only have 4 hearts.

I was going to do that but it feels too much like cheating. At least with the deer mini game it costs arrows and I have to put effort into killing / selling the meat.

Probably hard for 4 hearts only. I have no problem only because I maxed out an armor set so if I get hit I don't take much damage unless I get hit by the laser. Plus I have like 12 hearts.

I got my 7th heart and decided to go for it.

I was doing random shrines and happened to come across the one that gives the climber's bandana. Then I looked up where to find the climbing boots and was able to get those too. That shrine was the easiest shrine ever because you just open the chest and you're done. After completing another shrine (or maybe it was the climber's bandana one) I got a cool thunder sword. I also had an Ancient Battle Axe+ saved. I took those and went into the shrine for the climber's gear.

Inside the shrine was one of those mechanical robot bosses. I have the Champion's Tunic so I was able to see that the robot had 3,000 HP. Before I entered the shrine, I upgraded my Stasis to Stasis+ so I can now freeze time on enemies. I abused that over and over and in the process, I lost my thunder sword and the Ancient Battle Axe+. When the robot had 200HP left I froze him again and brought him down to around 10HP. I got hit pretty hard after that and nearly died but I got up and finished him off.

Now I have all the climbing gear and climbing walls is so much faster. To celebrate, I decided to retire my horse. He always stayed where I left him so I teleported to where he was last, ran all the way across the map to my house in Hateno Village and dropped him off. Now he'll live the remainder of his life in peace instead of out in the wilderness. I'm also thinking of getting another horse so he can have a friend. I'll post pictures another time when that happens.

Not sure where I'll go next but I'm thinking Gerudo Valley.

I went to Gerudo Valley and got kicked out for being a man. Then I went to the nearby town and met the guy who gives me womens clothes. I messed around inside the town a bit and started that quest to invade the Yiga Clan hideout. I finished that and beat the boss and now randomly through out the overworld I'm being attacked by Yiga Clan members.

Finished the Tarrey Town quest. That's been my most favorite quest line so far. I'm going to keep going back to that town and check up on it every chance I get.

I finally completed the world map.

Talked to the first Great Fairy next to Kakariko Village. Upgraded my climbing and stealth outfits from her but haven't noticed much of a difference.

Got the cold resistance outfit from Rito Village. My next outfit will be the heat resistance one from Death Valley. I just need to save up a bit.

Done a few more shrines and now I'm at 8 hearts.

I came prepared by buying 20 shock arrows, followed by searching around and finding 20 more. I used a total of 5 for the first stage to enter Vah Ruta. Then I activated all the stones and defeated Waterblight Ganon. The first stage of that fight took some life out of me but the second stage was a lot easier.

Now I believe I just need two more hearts to get the Master Sword.

I also saved up for the flame guard + desert heat outfits. I've upgraded my climbing and stealth outfits to second stage and plan on upgrading them again soon.

The Zoro quest. Keep at least one sword and bow you get from Yiga members since you need them for a quest in Hateno I think.
I haven't seen any Yiga Clan members for a while but I'll remember to save them next time. Is there a good spot to get them to spawn? Or is it all random?

Central Hyrule I guess. I just cleared out the castle and the entire area and they kept spawning. Also learned how to prevent a blood moon from triggering which made it easier to find koroks.

No that's not as bad as the rain.

Just got my 12th heart from doing the three shrines that give Barbarian Armor. I didn't think it would take Lynel Horns to upgrade the gear. Now I need to start reading up on killing them.

You'll also need a frost spear for that side quest. I was lucky to have had one on me.

I didn't get a chance to play tonight because I spent too much time on my website. But I played last night and got some shrines completed to reach 13 hearts. I was exploring around Hebra Mountains to find the shrines when I came across this neat little shack with some girl inside who wanted me to pay her to teach me some lessons on something. I didn't have time to keep talking to her but I'll go back. Then I went into the Lost Woods and got the Master Sword. I ended up playing until like 5AM which I regretted when I had to wake up a few hours later.

Not sure what I'll do tomorrow night. I did want 14 hearts so I might do some shrines or I might hit up the next Divine Beast. I wanted to get to 14 hearts and then start raising my stamina again.

I also really want to kill some Lynels so I can upgrade my Barbarian gear. Are killing Lynels hard? Or do I just need to make a few elixirs? My style of fighting is rush in and kill which seems like a bad idea for them.

Okay. I have so many good weapons right now. I need to add another weapon display in my house. I'm using one right now which proudly displays my spear from defeating Vah Ruta.

They're hard but I just cheese them with the ability you get from the camel. Then you can ride them and attack for extra damage. I haven't found a silver one yet though. You reminded me I need to go back to that shack. I can play tomorrow night.

Camel? Which ability is that? You may have told me but I forgot.

And also, which Divine Beast is "next" after Vah Ruta? I might go Desert next. I just have to figure out about that sand seal thing because I forgot.

Let me know how the shack goes!

Electrical attack that damages massively but also stuns. You have to hit a lynel in the eye with an arrow to stun them which is practically impossible on the fly. That's what I did but apparently it's the hardest to do. I upgraded the rubber set fully before beating it. I'm going to do the bird next and leave the salamander for last.

I finished beating the camel earlier. Just entering the divine beast was a pain but after 12 bomb arrows I managed to get inside. I'm guessing I'll need fire arrows for the bird and ice arrows for the lizard. Activating the first two stones were pretty easy. Getting the other three took some time. But nothing was as annoying as trying to figure out how to get the outside chest. Thunderblight Ganon wasn't too bad. I came in with five fairies and now I have none. I was about to get a game over when I decided to just go all out and I beat him.

Sand seal surfing is pretty fun. I explored the desert a bit and then went back to Gerudo Village. Now I'm working on the quest to get the Thunder Helm. So far I did that quest to find Barta which helped me find the final Great Fairy. But I haven't activated yet because I have like 500 rupees. And I did the flint quest and got a sapphire circlet in return. Now I'm going to see if I can do a few more side quests before bed.

Got my 14th heart! Now I'm going to focus on stamina for a bit.

Also started killing red Lynels. They're not as difficult as I thought. I tried killing the silver one on top of the mountain by the giant sword and I got pretty close a few times. I need to get better at dodging so I can use flurry rush.

also got the thunder helm.

And I've been paying attention to my surroundings more to save up Korok Seeds. I had no idea you could expand your inventory with them.

Yeah but I've just been following a korok map. I'll do the Rito dungeon tonight after I finish the lake area koroks.

Was exploring a bit waiting for the blood moon so I can kill more red lynels. Was able to find a recalled memory. That makes 4/12. Some of them are tough to figure out.

Definitely. I didn't know what I was doing in the first fight though.

I thought I broke my game since the blood moon suddenly vanished. I guess the wedding sidequest can glitch it out since there's a small timeskip. I went around killing things like silver lynels and it's back.
