Not sure if this has happened to anyone here, but I sold a game on there this last week, and it was damaged in transit (and pretty clearly the carrier's fault. There's a tread mark on it that looks like it was either run over by something or got crunched in a conveyor belt). I've never had this happen before, so I'm not sure what my recourse is here beyond offering a refund to the buyer (which I've already done).

Is there any way I can get reimbursed for the price of the item or at least the price of shipping from either eBay or the USPS? Thankfully, it wasn't very expensive (only 15 bucks), but I at least want to be prepared in the future if it happens again.

Unless it was insured then you're out of luck. Check how it was shipped though as all my default shipping options when I was selling included insurance. Although I was shipping pricier / heavier items so that could have played into it

same thing happened to me when I bought something off ebay many years ago. The package had a huge tire track on it and the game inside was damaged because of it. Not sure what causes that but I'm guessing its some sort of machine issue.

Yeah, I just imagine in the warehouse a couple guys noticing a package got caught in the machine or ran over or whatever and instead of like, doing something about it, they just throw it back in the pile.

Yeah, they will not even give you free shipping next time. Without insuring the package all the risk is on you even if it's their screwup. I have a hard time thinking of any other business that operates in such a fashion, but realistically what options do you have? There are really only three companies who ship stuff for person to person purposes and they all have about the same degree of reliability and responsibility.

Sorry for your misfortune Leonhart. BTW, what game was it?

Edit: If you do sell anything else on ebay in the future make sure to take pictures or video showing how you packed it and the fact that it was intact in the first place. Even if you do insure it, they may reject your claim for lack of sufficient evidence. Then you'll be out the item and the insurance cost. I learned that the hard way.

The game was Shadow of the Colossus (the PS2 version), which I suppose is fitting because it was crushed in the shadow of some unknown colossus in transit.

Also, I always take plenty of pictures of items before I ship them, and the buyer sent me plenty of pictures of the game and the packaging.

airlines

How so? Only time I've ever had an issue getting money back from an airline was for flights affected by hurricanes. In which case they gave me new flights but no compensation

Every other time I've been fucked over by an airline I've been compensated more than my loss or giving replacement flights plus compensation. Even when I missed a flight due to my own fault they offered me a new flight or full refund.

Granted I've never lost a suitcase so I don't know the procedure there but when it happened to a friend they seemed happy with the compensation.
