Twitter is designed to keep you paying attention to twitter, not make you happy.

These. This is also the basis for Twitter's (among other social media platforms') algorithms having a bias toward showing people extreme right-wing content: it tends to be objectionable in ways that provoke objectors into commenting on it. Social media algorithms show you content they expect you'll interact with (and sell data indicating that you're more likely to interact with such content to other companies who can capitalize on that tendency), which is related to but doesn't necessarily overlap with content you like.

I stopped going on twitter because the blue checkmarks ruined it.

Now the only replies you ever see on the site are from the 0.1% of people who bought the checkmark, instead of the ones that were the best replies.

It's the same reason why YouTube will recommend videos with high dislike counts - the algorithms that control what gets recommended measure engagement, not approval. If you interact with something out of disgust, anger, or hate, it will register in exactly the same way as if you react to it positively.

So basically, stop interacting with things you hate. Learn to ignore it. Stop giving it your attention.

This is a lesson most people need to learn these days, honestly.
