Apparently the animation equivalent of this isn't also on strike, but not for a lack of solidarity, but because they would instantly get fired because they have less protections and they are in a far worse position than the writers are.

That's grim, but not as surprising.

The one 15 years ago ruined at least one show I was watching and created a massive new flood of (mostly bad) reality tv shows. I think as fans we'll barely notice this just like we've all largely forgotten how much of an interruption covid was for scripted tv.

I don't think this is true? Reality TV as a genre was popular already anyway and my instinct is that it wouldn't have been practical to scramble to produce a bunch of new, otherwise unplanned shows in such a short amount of time. Reality TV doesn't mean "you can just crap it out" even if the results feel like they should indicate that.

Those all came out last year. Those all were great.
Even this year is off to a great start - Vox Machina S2 was great, and I've heard that Picard S3 is absolutely dynamite.

You would do well to stop saying "Rings of Power is emblematic of every single writer in the business" and maybe expand your horizons some. Particularly if you haven't seen Winning Time - you would absolutely adore it.

I suppose this one? I watched TV more during the last one but that was also back when I watched late night shows and they got some good content out of that.

I might watch less now but I think more shows I care about are affected here - Last Week Tonight for the most immediate example but maybe others should this continue for a while.

100% on the side of the writers however.

Anyone saying TV and writers suck now aren't watching enough good TV and are just watching mainstream schlock.

There's tons of great and well-written TV. I could probably double Han's already good list there.

For every writer who makes something crappy there's two or three more making quality stuff that's effected, and probably moreso.

There's MORE than ever before, which inevitably means both more good and more bad.

I also have to imagine that a lot of "edges get sanded down" for writers making stuff for big franchises like the MCU. Those companies don't necessarily want the most groundbreaking, visionary scripts. They want shit that will appeal to wide audiences, which means it really can't get to "avant garde". I mean, isn't that what happened with the original Antman script?
