Yeah being sandwiched between John Wick, Mario, and Guardians 3 was perhaps not the best release time. I think it'd be totally fine to watch on a smaller screen though.

Yeah it's super good. While the Mario movie is still pretty good imo as far as gaming franchise adaptions go, it at times feels like it was 'designed by committee' (which a lot of Illusion's movies do). The Dungeons and Dragons movie, on the other hand, felt like it was made by people that really, truly love D&D and gaming, and it made a big difference.

It just had a lot of "heart" to it.

"Heart" is a good word for it. Gave me Galaxy of the Guardians 1 vibes.

I saw it last week and was really impressed

I really liked the chase scene with the shapeshifting girl that was all done in one shot, that was great

yeah, it felt extremely similar to guardians to me.

edgin = star-lord
holga = gamora
xenk = drax
sofina = nebula

plus the whole "we're all a bunch of outcasts and now we're a team" theme of the movie.

good film, though.

and the reluctance to do the right thing but doing it anyway in the final act because even though they're bad people they're not 'that' bad

To be fair Guardians 1 was already a D&D campaign in Marvel form

Yeah I was planning to see it but the weekend I wanted to go it had just left the theater.

Now I'm waiting on Red Box to get it.

Last week it was still playing in well over 2,000 theaters so no way will it drop off THAT badly. It'll probably still be another couple weeks before that drops under 100.

Yeah this

It felt a bit like that because it felt like a D&D campaign-- I saw it with a bunch of D&D friends and I was like "yeah that would be me, that would be him, etc" they all felt like character archetypes we might play right down to the classes which was humorous. Very good movie for anyone who is into that stuff and in general really.

I saw it on my wedding anniversary lol, and thankfully it was actually really good.

The word I kept thinking was charming. Its a very charming movie, and feels modern but also sort of nostalgic with the mix of practical and special effects, and a willingness to embrace being so obviously goofy.

Chris Pine is always my favorite in any movie hes in, but I think the guy from Detective Pikachu sort of stole the show, he was very good.

I wound up seeing it shortly after release.

I wouldn't jump to recommend it to people who aren't at least somewhat familiar with D&D on a basic level - there's a good bit of terminology and lore references thrown around that make it much more enjoyable if you "get" it.

However, even if you don't, it's still quite charming and solid on its own merits. One of the friends I saw it with isn't really in that subculture at all and still very much enjoyed it, even if he had a dozen questions about things after.

There were actually more people in the theater for DnD today than the showing of Guardians I saw this morning.

Probably because GotG3 has like a twenty showings an hour in the same theater, but still, an impressive turn out for a film that came out like two months ago.

IDK about you, but where I live we have a "second run" theater that shows movies that have been pushed out of the main theaters and they sell the tickets at a deeply discounted rate since they make most of their money from concessions anyway. If it's something you don't mind waiting for, and you don't mind the place being old and a bit shabby, it's a good way to see a movie on the cheap.
