brussels sprouts, like many vegetables, are an acquired taste. for me, i never had the opportunity to try them growing up. my family didn't cook them, and they were never on the menu at restaurants we frequented. as i got older, i developed a general distaste for vegetables, so i never sought out brussels sprouts specifically. however, i'm open to trying new foods and expanding my palate, so perhaps one day i'll give them a chance. who knows, i might even like them!

If cooked correctly, Brussels sprouts can be really amazing. If cooked wrong, they can be absolutely horrible.

Unfortunately, most people tend to cook them wrong. Sauteed is generally the best, though some people have good luck with grilling or roasting. If you want to boil them, just save yourself the trouble and toss them right in the garbage can.

I like to take a pound of bacon and cut it into small pieces, then cook it until the bacon is crisp and most of the fat has been rendered out. Remove the meat, leaving the bacon grease in the pan. Saute diced onion and halved Brussels sprouts until the sprouts have just a bit of resistance when you bite into one (al dente). Remove from heat and mix the bacon pieces back into the pan. Serve over white rice.

You can also serve it over pasta, but in this case, save about 1/4 cup of the pasta water and stir that into the sprouts at the end to make a sort of sauce.

And you can make it vegetarian by omitting the bacon and using butter instead of the bacon grease. Or use olive oil to go completely vegan.

I have changed several people's minds about Brussels sprouts with this recipe.

I'm in the same boat never tried them, then I randomly tried to cook them a few years back now that I'm in my 30's and uh... I didn't really enjoy them. Better off just stir frying some cabbage, it tastes better.

This. If they retain some firmness, they can be great (especially with bacon, yes). If they're boiled/soft, then they're as awful as everyone says. It seems that everyone boiled them in the past and that's why they have such a bad reputation.

I love brussels sprouts. There are like 500000 tasty recipes and things online but even just cutting them up and getting them all brown in a pan with butter is still fantastic, imo.

It really depends how they are cooked like most things the more optimal the recipe the better they come out. I thought I hated them based on childhood experiences then I had some at a nicer restaurant and they were very good.

Like I said, I would try them if someone had them, but I also wont go out of my way to get them at the store or anything. I have no reason or need to. Its not like theres a shortage of other foods I already eat and like and use in recipes
