it's kind of its own genre. Smash, Brawlhala, Nick All Stars Brawl, Multiversus, etc

Obviously yes.

It plays differently to things like Street Fighter or Tekken, but it's clearly a fighting game (just like how the original Crash Bandicoot plays very differently to Mario 64 but nobody would argue that both aren't platformers).

Thats like saying Mario Kart is its own genre. Obviously Mario Kart is still a racing game.
