Is that a fair assessment?

Imo once you give into GTA4 and all the bad gameplay changes, it actually becomes an okay game. Granted, still like a 6/10.

The outspoken hate for it seems to be more illegitimate than the actual overpraise it received but that's just typical internet hates thing effect.

It's my least favorite GTA. Just found the characters and story really boring.

Online was fun, though.

I like going to the "friendly fire off" online sessions and just killing people w/ rocket launchers anyways (launched them in the air and they take fall damage haha)

Honestly...
I like the characters, feels like they're actually having a genuine conversation with Niko.
Definitely a fan of multiplayer as well, everything was grounded, none of that oppressor BS in this game.

GTA4 was a masterpiece, shame they never gave us SP DLC for V like they did for IV, Lost and the Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony were probably some of the best DLC ever released.

GTA 4 is pretty great. I wish I played those dlcs more. I feel like people revisit it now after the GTA Online only culture now and while it's not a 10/10 game and maybe the main story takes itself too seriously (this I did not mind) most ppl think favorably of it. Just the time when it came out it still felt like a parody exaggeration of real life to me whereas V was just all people literally act like this now. It's ridiculous.

I think GTA IV just came out at a really good time.

It's the only GTA game I've never finished, I just thought it was very boring

It's not terrible but definitely inferior to 3, VC, SA, and V

At the time, it was phenomenal. It just felt so big and really felt like it was a major step in open world gaming. Looking back on it now, I still think it holds up very well. Compared to V, IV is way more grounded and subdued. I honestly find most of IV's cast more memorable to V's, as I think that Nico and his relationships with the characters were really well-written and distinct from each other.

Not to mention the L&D and BoGT DLCS which were amazing, especially BoGT. BoGT literally added alot of color, weapons, and other things that really added to the experience. Luis and Gay Tony's story was pretty damn fun. L&D was fun but it didn't grip me that much, but the fact that each character's story were happening around the same time was just really cool to see. I love how IV is almost like a time capsule of what the late 2000s were like.

GTA4 has a learning curve because of the physics. Both walking and driving will feel strange compared to its contemporaries. Once it clicks though it's far more engaging than other entries. I'd actually argue it had the best driving in the series. The game as a whole doesn't provide the same kind of power fantasy as the others because it's more grounded and melancholy which I think people mistake for boring.

It definitely stands alone tonally in the series, and I won't lie my first couple tries with the game didn't leave the best first impression because it wasn't what I expected/wanted. After having made peace with that though I really grew to love it.

I agree with the physics. It's amazing.
You could have any car in the game potentially survive a gernade or explosion and still have it functional to some degree, drive it like nothing had happened. Your character can stagger whenever a explosion goes off nearby, heavy cars can make for great getaway vehicles as they can clear roadblocks with little difficulty or possibly send drivers flying through the window should they ram into you at high speed.

Absolutely love GTA IV.
