Literally don't even see or hear customers. I call their name to get their attention and they don't hear. I have to go over and tap them on the shoulder to bring them out of their focus with their phone.

I've only had one coworker that I had no problem doing his Job for him.
He maybe was in his 80's and a great person.

He's the only one I've totally covered for, that I don't resent.

I am the least corporate person you could meet, but I do believe in some basic form of work ethic.

Sounds like you're talking about a low level service employee.

And they are absolutely not paid enough to care. You get what you pay for.

This. They're paid to be there, not paid to care. Its unskilled labor, anyone can do it and they pay like anyone can do it so I don't know why they expect top tier effort from workers.

Yeah I had to fire 2 Accountants that would stare at their phones most of the day. I don't mind every once in awhile if you want a breather or have to text/call someone personal. But when you're literally behind schedule/deadlines and it can be traced to you being on the phone too long, then we have a problem. One of the workers, whom I fired, was literally just sliding up watching tik tok videos and when I ask him what was his progress on the AP invoices he was processing, he said he was behind schedule because of his "mental health". Mother fucker couldn't even be honest. That's one risk you run into when you hire someone very young or lacks work experience.

Totally true, but the cheap and malleable.
Having said that, once you get to the point you need a babysitter over a manager, there is a problem.

This is true in a lot of cases. Its ok a few second here and there and its ok if theres nothing to do, but it snot ok to be on it a good chunk of the day while the work/production suffers. And money has nothing to do with it.

so this scenario in your op you were at the business the entire day to examine the worker's productivity?

Yeah, as a Senior Manager, you gotta put some faith in your staff to be able to handle the job. I specifically told them they're allowed to do whatever just so long as they can get the job done, a "ends justify the means" kind of deal. The only time I had to hound on some staff was when they're clearly behind on something that shouldn't be taking this long and I can trace it back to them just goofing off. If this was just joe schloe blue collar job it's whatever, but the whole point of them being on my team in my department is that they're looking to go forward on their career. I can't do that if they're going to slack off.

Reception desk at work. Customers are supposed to stop by and check in first to use services but coworkers are glued to their phones and just let people walk by. We have to keep sending people back to the desk to check in first.

I trade stonks on my phone at work since thats the only time the market is open.

If a boss gives me grief over it, I tell them to pay me more so I dont need to be making that side income to stay afloat.

On op's example, their addiction to their cellphones obstructed them from doing their job at the moment. If I see a pattern of the same thing occurring over and over I would write them up. Its called doing the very basics as an employee to keep your paycheck. And with that job ethic you are getting nowhere in life.

Jerkoffs who do that also influence distrust towards terrible managers who aren't in tune with their teams, causing the good employees to be held accountable for the same problem.

Not that hard to just do the job so you have that kind of downtime throughout the day...

tbh sounds more like bad management

why would you blame these people instead of their managers who according to what op has told us now already MORE than know this is happening and not changed it?

like he said

More so if you pay below a living wage you should expect minimal effort. One should not be expected to care about the job if the job isn't going to care about the worker.

It partially can be but accountability can also trickle down to a manager who may be very lenient and laid back to allow that sort of flexibility and then their job is on the line because said jerkoff abused that trust, which results in the hammer falling and the fun stopping.

Debatable in this case. The AI will actually pay attention to the person it's receiving. Unlike TC's coworker.
