World 3 beaten. Died a few times but went from 21 lives to 31 lives lol. All but one of my deaths came from the hardest level in the first three worlds. You know the one. 3-8. Gulp

Fire Mario makes things a heck of a lot easier. Total play time so far: 1 hr, 5 min. Hoping to play a lot tonight

Love SMB3. World 5 was fun but a bitch and is where you feel the difficulty spike imo. Definitely the most lives I lost in a world so far. The level with the spinning platforms, the auto scroller with the chain chomp looking enemy that shoots fire and the one with the lakitu launching spinies all cost me a few lives. And the fortresses were considerably tougher too.

2 hr, 5 min seems low but apparently thats what Im at for play time. 29 lives in the bank so it wasnt too crushing.

Done with world 6. I have 27 lives. Probably going to stop for the night because I dont see myself powering through to beat the game. I have played for 2 hours, 50 minutes.

I have 3 fire flowers, a Tanooki suit, a Hammer suit or whatever its called, a Frog suit, 2 stars and some crap that doesnt help me (Jugems Cloud, a bunch of P-Wings etc.)

Id probably have 99 lives if I was any good at that damn line up the picture game. I am not.

I remember being good with the timing in that picture game when I was a kid, but not anymore, heh.

P-Wings are great for many levels, though I understand if you're avoiding them because they seem too overpowered.

Yeah, theres nothing wrong with using what the game gives you. I will never diss someone for doing it. But I want to beat every level, not skip them, and a P-Wing feels more like skipping the level to me even if the game technically registers it as beaten.

I do use all other items though. Fire flower, frog suit, leaf, Star, mushroom etc. power ups are part of the Mario games and theres nothing wrong with using them. Its just that those power ups help you through the levels rather than helping you mostly avoid them

Super Mario Bros. 3 is beaten! I honestly dont remember beating it before? When I started this play through I was under the impression I had done it before but only using warp whistles. It was very fun and I loved revisiting a game Ive spent hundreds of hours playing in my childhood alone (clearly I wasnt very good lol).

I do plan to rank the games when Im done but you dont need me to tell you this is one of many jewels in Nintendos crown. Happy to give opinions people may want and please share your own SMB3 experiences if youre so inclined. All in all this took me about 5.5 hours, and I dont think there was an un-fun minute. Though Ill admit I looked up solutions on the last couple fortress puzzles where you need to find switches to make doors appear or access doors. I was getting nowhere fast, lol.

A ton of concepts in this game were so fun. Im amazed they only used the shoe once!

This also marked the first game where I didnt have to repeat any levels after beating them. That definitely did not hurt the fun factor lol.

Thats game 4. Next up is Super Mario Land!

I'm mostly just poking fun at not being okay with save states and rewind but being willing to look up solutions.

In my last playthrough, I was struck by how many of the little tricks and secrets that I remembered, even having not played Mario 3 in quite a long while. Same thing applied for World as well.

There's that one stage in World 6 (the snow one) where it's an underground stage where it loops and you have to fly up into the right opening in the ceiling to find the exit pipe. As a kid, that stage completely stumped me until I viewed a guide. But I'm pretty sure it was one you could skip over by taking a different path.

The, I think it was a mini-fortress, where you had to activate a P switch to go into a room that was otherwise filled with blocks, to find the hidden exit.

In World 7, those vertical oriented stages (or was it only one?) where the screen looped around if you ran off one side, blew my mind a bit as a kid.

Ha, yeah. Thats fair. Its perfectly fine if people want to use rewind or save states if theyre having fun. But for me, those trivialize the challenge of the platforming itself. Youre guaranteed to win every time, theres no risk of game over. I am hoping not to look up any of the secret exits for World but Im not going to drag my playing to a screeching halt for days upon days either.

Asking me to solve puzzles on a timer where running out of time costs me a life and you arent saving my progress after each level? Nah fam Im gonna look that up if I lose a couple lives

Game #5 - Super Mario Land (1989)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/5/3/AARMM-AAEr6l.jpg

I beat this once before right when it came to the 3DS VC. I remember being a bit underwhelmed, but thinking it was an okay game based on the varying limitations inevitably faced by a GB launch title. Also, I forgot this game doesnt automatically save your progress when you finish a world. Thats nice. I mean I get it due to how short this game is but I tend to enjoy having my progress saved when I beat a level or at least each world, but SML seems pretty generous with checkpoints and the bonus game isnt too hard.

On my first run I got to 4-2 and game overd for good. Made several stupid mistakes and having my one year old scream in my ear most of the time didnt help at all. I forget how many of these occasionally imposing looking enemies you can still just squash by jumping on them.

Tonight Im hoping to beat this and Ill probably try to do hard mode as well. Once this is done Im excited to tackle Super Mario World!

I beat Super Mario Land twice tonight - regular and hard mode. Total play time: 2 hours, 38 minutes. On hard mode I got to 4-3 with eight lives and I was ready to say screw it and use save states if I couldnt pull it off, but fortunately that wasnt necessary as I did it with five lives to spare. I have mixed feelings about Super Mario Land but overall I did enjoy playing it and am glad to leave it behind me for now.

Tomorrow, Super Mario World.

Game #6 - Super Mario World (1990)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/1/AARMM-AAEsGb.jpg

Hoping to kick things off tonight! I saw this game saves your progress at certain points so thats nice.

Im planning to save hunting for hidden exits until after I beat Bowser. If I stumble upon any, no biggie, but I prefer to play through the levels in order. Id imagine theres no barrier to doing so.

Any general tips, suggestions, etc. as I attempt to beat SMW for the first time? I dont think I ever made it past the end of world 2 or beginning of world 3.

Hmm, good to know. Ill probably take an approach of just playing and finding stuff naturally. Im going to make an effort to find secret exits individually though Im sure Ill have to look up a few.

If I take a secret exit and it takes me from say world 2 to world 4, do I have a way to get back to world 2? Or am I stuck working through the map backwards to access those levels again or something?

If you take a secret exit, a new path opens up in the world map, usually leading to a pipe/warp.

You don't have to go through the new path, though. You can just replay the level, take the normal exit and continue the normal path that will appear.

Try to find and activate the Switch Palaces as soon as you are able. Slight spoiler: I think there's 4 of them.

The game saves anytime you beat a Ghost House or Fortress. You can go back to finish a Ghost House again if need be.

There's 96 unique exits in the game. Slight spoiler: Levels with a yellow dot have 1 exit, levels with a red dot have more than 1.

Well...there's some that are a little difficult to get without some setup before hand (switch blocks, Yoshi, etc.).

Good point about the Ghost Houses. Those are easy to miss.

I just played through World recently and I think I got like 90ish of the exits, despite doing my best to get them all along the way. There were a few at the very end (in the Bowser area) that I just didn't feel like getting because I was trying to finish the game in one day. But I definitely missed a few even accounting for that.

No, but most of the ghost houses do have secret exits.

You will probably find some secret exits without trying too. They vary a lot in how hard they are to find.

There is not really any direct world skipping. I mean, you can. But you don't clear one level and go from say 2 to 4. It's really only the star road that does something resembling this. It's often just different ways to go.

No levels have more than one secret exit.

I was able to sneak 20 minutes and play world 1. Never really appreciated Super Mario World fully until playing through the games in release order, but its a beauty. I am still getting used to the movement, particularly Im used to Mario picking up speed a little faster when he runs/needing a little less distance but its not a flaw of the game, just due to me barely having played this one before. Its a lot of fun and Yoshi is a great addition.

Having played a lot of Super Mario 64 growing up, I know some people dont care for it nowadays and feel it hasnt aged well, but going from SMW (or Yoshis Island if you prefer) and SML2 to Super Mario 64 is just insane. I am appreciating World immensely already but I cant help but think about how mind boggling the upcoming jump to 3D really was.

SMW is probably the single game I have played the most ever. Occasionally complete it quickly, which I can easily enough do in about 20 minutes. Probably once a year complete it entirely. I originally beat it shortly after turning 3 years old on my dad's SNES. He told me it was annoyed his 3 year old was better at it than him. It might also be the game I own the most times? At least beat on most. I have it on SNES, GBA, Wii, 3DS, Wii U, Switch and SNES classic. Could also be another Mario game I suppose.

I'm not entirely sure why I prefer it to 3. I think it's the secret exits part, generally prefer how this world is. They're very close in terms of level design and as mentioned definitely top 20 games of all time both, probably top 10.

This is really cool to hear. I created this thread in hopes of inspiring Mario talk and thats great you are enjoying SML2 so far. I got a couple worlds in but never beat it.

And yes, I am also surprised they dont have SML in the Game Boy library for Switch online. Its not like theyre ashamed of it or something, they had it available on 3DS VC. Every game in a prominent Nintendo franchise short of licensing hell situations should have a legal means of playing it without resorting to secondhand purchases imo

Sounds like this goes against my preferred play style but is good to know for speed running whizzes who can beat 84 games in a day =P

On the topic of Super Mario World, Im having a blast but just havent had much time to play. I sacrificed sleep a good bit lately to power through SMB2 and SMB3 but unfortunately my one year old son is going through a sleep regression and Im a wuss who doesnt do well on four hours of sleep a night. Between this and work and other responsibilities, I needed to slow down my play until 1-2 a.m. days.

Yoshis Island is 100% complete and Im working through Donut Plains. So far Ive cleared both the main and secret exit for Donut Plains 1 + 2 and I activated green switches. The Cape Feather is a lot of fun. Puts me at 11/96 with Donut Ghost House up next.

I remember using Top Secret Area to farm lives as a kid. Part of this was, for the original SNES cart, after saving, it didn't remember how many lives you had, so it always went back to 5 when reloading after turning it off. I did replay SMW recently on the Switch, and just used that to save instead.

Also, as an FYI, not all ghost houses have secret exits: world 3 and 6 ghost houses do not, the rest do

Yeah, with the ability to save often, farm lives and get whatever power-ups you want by revisiting levels, this game is the least stressful one Ive (re)played so far lol. Getting through both SMB2s was the most daunting part of this little project due to limited continues in USA and Lost Levels being, well, *gestures to Lost Levels*

Super Mario Land also has limited continues, and no continues if you do hard mode, but its not that bad considering how short the game is. Getting to Wart and losing all your progress is not a fun time.

Thank you for the tip on the ghost houses. I was initially prepared to bring a Cape Feather to each of them to make sure I wasnt missing anything. I looked up a list of # of secret exits per level so I should be all set.

FWIW, from memory I think the rest of the ghost houses don't require you to bring in a powerup like cape anyway for the secret exit. Most secret exits throughout the game don't require outside-level power up help, although it can make it easier - I guess the first Donut Plains Ghost House is an exception, though I believe you can do loops in that so maybe there's a cape power up there, if you loop enough? And yeah, the only things other than ghost houses with secret exits are red dots, so you should be set as far as knowing which levels have secrets.
