I just think they just make Squall a little too effective at butting heads with her when you pick the mean options to a level where I have trouble buying he's actually getting worn down by her. To me it feels less like "oh he suddenly realizes he's fond of her" and more "surprise! Squall loves her now!" If Squall was just a bit less ruthless maybe I could see it working but yeah I dunno. I do very much think the story works better if you pick the nicer ones because even those he seems "in character" in that he still kinda pushes her away-- it's just less jarring when he flips over in disc 3. --- No problem!
