of all the stupid things it tries to do (you have to read carefully to watch it invent games and change them mid contest), this is probably my favorite final:

Estimated percentage: Super Mario Bros. 3 - 50%, The Legend of Zelda - 50%

Based on this simulated bracket, Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda ended up in a tie in the final round.

I mean we had Lightning in a contest before FF13 came out...but at least FF13 was previously announced with a trailer at that time. I don't think we had a whiff of FO3 or ME1 in 2004.

And this is a funny topic to try on ChatGPT. I bet you could get it to play with x-stats, but then we've been doing that for twenty years. It seems to not know a lot about our contests by default though.

User
What was controversial about L-Block winning the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs?

ChatGPT
I'm sorry, but as of my last knowledge update in September 2021, I couldn't find any information about an L-Block winning the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs. It's possible that this event occurred after my knowledge cutoff date or it might be a fictional or niche event that I'm not aware of. GameFAQs holds character battles where users vote for their favorite video game characters, but without more specific details, I cannot provide information on any controversy surrounding L-Block winning in 2007.

User
Who won 2007's Character Battle on GameFAQs.com?

ChatGPT
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the winner of the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs.com was Auron from the game Final Fantasy X. Auron emerged victorious after a series of user votes, ultimately defeating other popular video game characters to claim the title. It's important to note that my information might not be up-to-date, so there is a possibility that there have been changes or updates since then.

User
Who did Auron defeat in the championship?

ChatGPT
In the championship of the 2007 Character Battle on GameFAQs.com, Auron defeated Samus Aran from the Metroid series to claim the title. Auron's popularity and support from fans helped him secure the victory over Samus Aran in the final round of the competition. However, please note that my knowledge is based on information available up until September 2021, and there may have been changes or updates to the competition since then.

hmm

Why did Super Mario RPG beat Street Fighter II in the GameFAQs 2004 Games Contest?

As an AI language model, I don't have access to specific real-time information or the ability to browse the internet. However, I can provide some general insights based on the knowledge available up until September 2021.

The GameFAQs 2004 Games Contest was an online poll where users voted for their favorite video game. The outcome of such contests often depends on various factors, including the popularity of the games, the demographics of the voters, and the personal preferences of the participants.
While I don't have the specific details of the contest you mentioned, Super Mario RPG and Street Fighter II are both iconic games that enjoyed significant popularity during their respective times. However, it's worth noting that Super Mario RPG had a unique appeal that set it apart from Street Fighter II.

Super Mario RPG, released in 1996, was a collaboration between Nintendo and Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft). It combined the well-known characters and setting of the Super Mario series with RPG (role-playing game) mechanics, creating a unique and memorable gameplay experience. The game received critical acclaim for its engaging story, colorful graphics, and innovative gameplay, attracting a dedicated fan base over the years.

On the other hand, Street Fighter II, released in 1991, is a classic fighting game that revolutionized the genre. It gained widespread popularity for its competitive multiplayer gameplay and diverse roster of characters. Street Fighter II has been highly influential and has had a lasting impact on the fighting game genre.

The outcome of the GameFAQs contest might have been influenced by factors such as the nostalgia and love for Super Mario RPG among voters, the passionate community around the game, and the overall voting demographics at the time. It's important to note that popularity contests like these can be subjective and often depend on the particular audience and context in which they take place.
Please keep in mind that the specific details of the GameFAQs 2004 Games Contest, including the reasons why Super Mario RPG might have beaten Street Fighter II, would require accessing archived information from that time period.

Why do you think Starcraft beat The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in the 2004 game contest?

I apologize for any confusion, but I couldn't find any specific information about a GameFAQs contest in 2004 where StarCraft and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker competed against each other. It's possible that you may be referring to a different contest or event that I'm not aware of.
However, I can offer some general insights about the popularity and appeal of StarCraft and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which may help understand why one game might have been favored over the other in a hypothetical contest.

StarCraft, released in 1998, is a real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. It gained immense popularity, particularly in the realm of competitive gaming and esports. The game offered a highly strategic and well-balanced multiplayer experience, which attracted a large and dedicated fanbase. StarCraft's depth, competitive nature, and enduring appeal might have contributed to its success in any contest.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, released in 2002, is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo. It received critical acclaim for its unique art style, immersive world, and engaging gameplay mechanics. While initially controversial due to its cel-shaded graphics, The Wind Waker has since gained a strong following and is considered one of the standout titles in the Legend of Zelda series.
If these two games were pitted against each other in a contest, the outcome would likely depend on various factors, including the preferences and demographics of the voters, the popularity of the games at the time, and the specific criteria used for judging.

It's important to note that contests or polls determining the "better" game are subjective and can vary widely depending on the specific audience, context, and criteria used for evaluation. Additionally, without access to specific details about the contest you mentioned, it is challenging to provide a definitive explanation for the hypothetical outcome.

Be honest. You voted for Starcraft, didn't you?

As an AI language model, I don't have personal opinions, preferences, or the ability to vote in contests. I don't possess personal experiences or emotions like humans do. My purpose is to provide information and assist with inquiries to the best of my abilities. I'm here to offer unbiased and objective responses based on the information I've been trained on.

Yeah but you still voted for Starcraft.

I apologize if my previous response was unclear. As an AI language model, I don't have the capability to vote or have personal preferences, so I did not vote for StarCraft or any other game. My purpose is to provide information and assist with inquiries in an objective and unbiased manner. If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

I was inspired by this topic to try to get ChatGPT to make a character battle bracket. I had some success with 64 entrants but it felt limiting. I fed it a ton of X-Stats data and also asked it to come up with some recent characters that it thought would do well and also asked it for some "iconic" characters that have been missed previously.

I made the mistake of wanting 128 characters and it absolutely could not handle that.

FINALLY I got it to make a list of 128 entrants that seems good but it cannot seed them or put them into a bracket without freaking out halfway through. So here's your perfect 128 character field for the ultimate 2023 character battle courtesy an AI that I guess knows better

Estimated percentage: Halo: Combat Evolved - 65%, Final Fantasy X - 35%

lmfao

LttP and Dibalo II in a 50-50 dead heat.

SMB3 Top 10 least popular game in the contest.

I guess the AI takeover is a bit further off than I thought.

To be fair, if nominations opened for a 128-entrant character battle here today, the resulting bracket probably wouldn't have a single Overwatch character (or League character either, though).

It's interesting to me, at least, to consider the snubs from this field. For example,

Among absent entrants of character battles past, CATS, KOS-MOS (who's only missed the one with vote-ins since her first game's North American release), and Ness tie for the most appearances, at eight a piece; Duke Nukem follows at seven, then there's several snubs with six. Princess Peach only has five contests to her name, but imo the Mario movie makes her warrant special mention.

Among consistent presences, Commander Shepard, GLaDOS, and Neku Sakuraba have each made all four contests they've been eligible for, the first two with consistently high seeds. Ike, Lloyd Irving, Miles Edgeworth, Ness, and Zidane Tribal have the longest active streaks of any snub, and the former's only been absent from 2006 since his introduction.

The strongest snubbed veterans in conventional circumstances are likely Pokmon Trainer Red and Squirtle, though the latter missed 2018 anyways. 2B's not quite on the same level but would still be a shocking snub.

Also, the Doom Slayer's essentially both a recent character who the model could reasonably expect to fare well and an "iconic" character who's been missed previously. ...And instead of any of the above, there's two instances of Tails.

I might make a bracket out of this, I was going to further add an element of randomness to each seed group by asking ChatGPT weird shit like "which of the 5 seeds would be best at teaching home economics? list from best to worst" just to see what crazy logic it would use to make the list

I haven't done a contest in a while, maybe I would do an AI-generated contest of some sort. I'd have to balance it with having an interesting incorporation of AI and not making it so random that it's not enjoyable

Yeah, ChatGPT is actually dumb as shit. If anyone gets convinced that it's a real person they might not be so bright themselves. It's basically wikipedia with a little more user friendliness and not as much information. There are still so many things it cannot do. It might be able to pass the bar exam, but it would absolutely fail at giving a nuanced argument in court.

yeah, that's all true. but as a counterpoint, what else can do this

Write an obituary for Cloud Strife. He was killed on East Midgar Avenue after a showdown with the swordsman Link. He is survived by his friends at the Seventh Heaven Bar, Tifa Lockhart and Barrett Wallace.

In Loving Memory of Cloud Strife

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the tragic loss of Cloud Strife, a true hero and warrior, who met his untimely demise on East Midgar Avenue. He valiantly fought until the very end in a fierce showdown with the renowned swordsman Link, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of gaming history. Cloud passed away on [date], at the age of [age].

Cloud Strife, a name synonymous with bravery and determination, was a beacon of hope in a world plagued by darkness and turmoil. With his iconic Buster Sword in hand, he led AVALANCHE and fought against the oppressive Shinra Electric Power Company, tirelessly striving for the liberation of his beloved city of Midgar.

Born and raised in the small town of Nibelheim, Cloud's journey took him from humble beginnings to the heights of heroism. His exceptional skills as a swordsman, combined with his indomitable spirit and unwavering loyalty, made him a force to be reckoned with. Alongside his comrades at the Seventh Heaven Bar, Tifa Lockhart and Barrett Wallace, he formed an unbreakable bond that transcended the boundaries of mere friendship.

Cloud's presence was felt far and wide, as he touched the lives of countless individuals with his selflessness and courage. His interactions with his companions, as well as his captivating love story with Tifa, served as a testament to his capacity for deep connection and empathy. Whether battling monstrous creatures or facing his own inner demons, Cloud's resilience inspired those around him to persevere and find strength in the face of adversity.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary warrior, let us remember Cloud Strife as the embodiment of heroism, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Cloud Strife is survived by his dear friends at the Seventh Heaven Bar, Tifa Lockhart and Barrett Wallace, who will honor his memory by carrying on his noble mission. May they find solace in knowing that Cloud's spirit will forever guide and protect them.

In this time of sorrow, let us come together to celebrate the remarkable life of Cloud Strife and the impact he had on all of us. His memory will remain etched in our minds, reminding us to stand tall in the face of adversity and fight for what we believe in. Rest in peace, Cloud, and may your soul find eternal peace in the Promised Land.

When asked who would win I got this response:

While it's impossible to accurately predict the outcome of a popularity contest, I can make an educated guess based on the popularity and recognition of certain characters. In this case, considering the overall popularity and fanbase of the characters, it's possible that characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, and Mario could be strong contenders. However, it ultimately depends on the preferences and voting patterns of the GameFAQs.com community, so any character has the potential to surprise and come out on top.

When asked who would be the ultimate loser I got this response:

While it's challenging to predict the ultimate loser with certainty, based on the matchups in the bracket, it's possible that the character who might face a tougher time in the competition and potentially be eliminated earlier could be L-Block from the Velocity Division. L-Block is a lesser-known character compared to some of the other popular contenders in the tournament, which could potentially affect its chances in the voting. However, it's important to note that these predictions are speculative, and the outcome of the contest would ultimately depend on the opinions and preferences of the GameFAQs users participating in the voting.

don't know why you guys got dumb chatgpt

me: In the context of old internet lore, do you know what is LUE?
ChatGPT:
Yes, I'm familiar with LUE, also known as the LUEshi Forum. LUEshi (pronounced "loo-eh-shee") was a sub-forum on the popular internet message board GameFAQs back in the early 2000s. LUEshi stood for "Life, the Universe, and Everything" and was inspired by the famous phrase from Douglas Adams' science fiction series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
LUEshi gained notoriety for its unique culture and bizarre community. The forum had few rules and attracted a large number of users who engaged in random and often nonsensical discussions. The topics ranged from humorous and irreverent to outright absurd, and the community developed its own inside jokes, catchphrases, and distinctive style of posting.
LUEshi became infamous for its "griefing" activities as well, where members would organize raids on other forums or websites for entertainment purposes. This often involved flooding boards with irrelevant or disruptive posts, sparking chaos and irritation among the targeted communities.
The forum was eventually shut down due to the increasing amount of disruptive behavior and the inability to moderate the content effectively. However, LUEshi left a lasting legacy on the internet and is remembered as a unique and somewhat eccentric part of internet lore from that era.

me: And how about the GameFAQs character contests?
ChatGPT:
The GameFAQs character contests were annual popularity contests held on the GameFAQs website. These contests aimed to determine the most popular video game character among the GameFAQs user community.
The most famous and enduring of these contests was the "Character Battle" or "Character Battle Contest" (often abbreviated as C.B.C.). It started in 2002 and became an annual event, typically taking place during the summer months.
During the contest, GameFAQs users could vote for their favorite video game characters in head-to-head matchups. The matchups were organized in a bracket format, similar to a tournament. Each round, users would vote for their preferred character, and the character with the most votes would advance to the next round.
The contests generated a lot of excitement and discussion among the GameFAQs community. Users campaigned for their favorite characters, often creating dedicated threads and posting persuasive arguments to rally support. The contests became known for unexpected upsets, intense rivalries, and passionate debates.
Some of the most iconic characters in video game history, such as Mario, Link, and Cloud, have participated in these contests, along with characters from more niche or lesser-known games. The contests provided a platform for fans to express their enthusiasm for their beloved characters and sparked spirited conversations about the merits of different video game franchises.
It's worth noting that while the GameFAQs character contests were a significant part of internet gaming culture for many years, their popularity has waned in recent times. The contests no longer take place regularly, but they remain a nostalgic memory for those who participated in and followed them.

me: Do you know which character won the first contest?
ChatGPT:

Yes, the first GameFAQs Character Battle Contest, also known as C.B.C. 2002, was won by the character Link from The Legend of Zelda series. Link emerged as the victor after a series of head-to-head matchups against other popular video game characters. The contest featured a bracket format, and Link secured the most votes throughout the competition, ultimately claiming the title of the most popular video game character according to the GameFAQs community in 2002.

i loved CBC 2002. but cbc 2003 might be even better:
me: And then what about the second contest, in 2003?
ChatGPT:
In the GameFAQs Character Battle Contest of 2003, commonly referred to as C.B.C. 2003, the winning character was Magus from the game Chrono Trigger. Magus, the enigmatic and powerful sorcerer, managed to garner the most votes and emerged as the victor in the second contest. His popularity among fans of Chrono Trigger, known for its captivating storyline and memorable characters, propelled him to claim the title of the most popular video game character in the 2003 GameFAQs contest.
