I actually started playing like months ago, but I lost about an hour of grinding after wiping. It was the battle right before the Floating Continent. Since I beat Tears of the Kingdom, thought I'd go back and try to finish. I'm pretty sure I'm about halfway through the game? I dunno if there's anything super important that's missable from here on (besides Shadow, and I know what to do there).

I don't think I've played much, but it sorta feels like I have. Got the Ribbon. Fell asleep for a year, saved Cid, got Sabin back, helped out Terra, but she stayed behind. Now I've gotten Edgar back, heading towards the next area.

Went to go get back who turned out to be Cyan. Got messed up by the Storm Dragon, so I left that for later. Went and found Terra's friend was pregnant, then helped her save the children. I didn't quite expect this to be, seemingly, the conclusion for her to understand what love was, but it's not bad. Since getting Terra back made it so I had 3 party members, due to how a couple of them got kicked out, I took the opportunity to get Gau.

Yeah, Storm Dragon is one of the toughest of the 8 dragons (ironic, since that's the one you're likely to encounter first). Thunder Shields and Aegis Shields help immensely (you should have one of each by the time you reach him); otherwise have Celes and Setzer use their best lightning magic while Sabin and Edgar pummel it with their usual heavy-hitting attacks. On the other hand, do NOT have the Ice Shield equipped, because it will make that character weak to the Wind element.

I don't particularly like using Gau. I only like using him for gimmick reasons like Destroyer so he's constantly casting Reraise or Onion Dasher because Traveler actually hits all the time unlike Cat Scratch.

Even with base rages he's passable. In the front row with a Hero Ring and Earrings, the Brawler rage alone will suffice for most of the first half of the game.

Yeah, Ill probably avoid using it too much. Used it on Deathgaze, cause why not. And then on the Storm Dragon just cause I was annoyed he was too strong for how early youre likely to meet him.

I've just never liked using characters I have no direct control over. Plus getting specific Rages is always a pain in the ass rng-wise, between whether or not the monster will show up at all and whether or not Gau will take his sweet-ass time coming back from the last Leap. In the WoR I almost always give up after I've farmed 2 or 3 Behemoth Suits to bet for Snow Mufflers.

Coliseum is a bitch. Unless you specifically set up a character to have no magic, it's a struggle dealing with the RNG. There are a couple characters you can muck with to make it better, though.

Gau is a pain if you don't know how to use him, and can easily become OP as fuck if you do.
Stray Cat is very strong when you first get him, and if you build him for physical keeps up throughout the game.
ChickenLip (original name) lets you get Quake in the WoB, which nukes a lot of stuff. And you get Gaia Gear near the end of WoB, which if you equip your whole party with, means you heal yourself on top of doing damage.
In WoR you already found Nightshade/Rafflesia which just completely breaks any boss encounter (seriously, it even works on super bosses in GBA).
Back Row + Snow Muffler + Merit Award + Magic Pot for almost immortality. Can't be killed except by defense penetrating non elemental damage.

On older versions:
Rhodox lets you Vanish/kill as soon as you get Vanish, and makes farming Intangir for magic points a joke.
Stray Cat + Merit Award + Tempest, the original Wind God build.

I always fell back on Terra w/ Ultima Weapon and Master Scroll for the Coliseum (UW's hit rate helped deal with Cactuars and Vector Lythos), and even that was an RNG pain. Sabin would be a good choice, if he didn't have a bad habit of killing himself with Soul Spiral. Locke w/ Thief's Glove equipped wouldn't be a bad choice either, since you're at least still guaranteed to deal damage when he selects Mug.

WoR character spoilers and some equipment mentions.

Gogo replacing all 3 of his custom commands with one thing, or Umaro both circumvent the RNG with minimal prep, but are limited. Optimal Coliseum is Setzer with no magic. He won't use Slot or Item, so without magic Fight is his only option. With no stat boosts he can do decent damage with Fixed Dice from a tower moogle raid, or Doom Darts on anything susceptible to Death.

Edit: with 255 defense Gau or Mog backup to cheese pure physical fights.

I just realized what Celes sometimes does in the Coliseum. It was Runic. It looks like a taunt without context.

Edit: Also she seems to be particularly prone to getting stuck in a loop, and I'm not sure why.

Edit 2: Trying to run away fixes it.

Im considering now that due to the more open nature of the 2nd half, its harder to really talk about everything. I beat up some dragons, Leviathan (well I cheesed this one), and Earth Dragon. Beat the Magic Master. And Im currently in the Dreamscape. Not necessarily in order. Oh yeah, I recruited Gogo and Umaro.

Think I've done a good portion of the side stuff. I might be able to fight Kefka, though the HP stats on some of my guys is pretty low, so I'm just fighting in the desert vs Cactuars and Slagworms to try and get it up + get extra spells.

The only thing that gives more straight XP are the Tyrannosaur in the Dino Forest north of the Veldt, but they really suck to fight because they know Meteor. You might run into the Brachiosaur, which is like a hidden boss that's even worse to fight than any of the minibosses in WoR.

Oh yeah. Here are my teams, not very far into Kefka's Tower:

Team 1:
Celes - 37
Locke - 33
Relm - 37
Sabin - 32

Team 2:
Terra - 36
Shadow - 36
Gau - 34
Edgar - 34

Team 3:
Setzer - 38
Mog - 34
Strago - 36
Cyan - 34

I'll admit, I didn't realize that I kinda screwed over Celes' team. Relm is doublecast Flare, but I mean, with how you can switch around Relics (if I bothered), anyone could do that.

Man I really did screw Celes' team lol. I think Terra got more leveled up than I thought she was. I picked some good members for her team cause I thought she was underleveled and needed them. They rinsed through their Warring Triad fight easily. Setzer's team was against, iirc, the Demon, who I believe was Red. Not too bad. Celes' team had some issues with the Force Field user. I didn't lose, but it was close.

I had a bit of a misunderstanding on how the team order was gonna work, but since there were 4 phases, these (best I remember, don't take the order too seriously) were my teams for each phase. Cyan was really dragging the team down in terms of damage output. Sabin wasn't much better, but at least he died quick. I gave pretty much everyone healing though, so they weren't wholly useless.

Cyan
Sabin
Strago
Edgar

Cyan
Shadow
Sabin
Setzer

Cyan
Shadow
Sabin
Setzer

Relm
Shadow
Mog
Celes

I got lucky with Shadow dodging the counterattack on death from the third phase, I didn't bring any intentional protection for that. Final phase of Kefka died way faster than I expected. I thought he was about to launch another huge attack when he started melting, then he just melted to death. Last team was certainly my strongest of the 4, so that was fortunate. I felt like I didn't use that much of my team, but I was only missing about 3, being Terra, Gau, and Locke.

Good game overall, though I'm sure I hurt my experience. I was afraid of missing out on stuff, but that ends up kinda stopping some surprises from happening. I'm not really in the mood to go into the post game stuff, I mostly just wanted to finally beat it. I'm glad I did.

Over the years (though mostly after I started playing it), I heard mentions of the large cast being a detriment. I can understand that, but I don't think that was the issue. There just weren't too many opportunities for the party to all chat and hang out. The moments they did, like when they helped Gau meet his father, were excellent. I can imagine how much more amazing the game would have been if there was party chat, a la Dragon Quest. But that would have tripled the script, at least.
