I played for like 2 hours on time trials racing against ghosts and thought I had it perfected. I got boosts around every corner. Boosts on every bump and jump. Got every coin. It seemed pretty straight forward apart from the weird flight section where he kinda collided with the bamboo chute so he could trick off of it. What helps you win the most online in worldwide and regional is item knowledge imo. Item knowledge>nice drift lines>meta vehicle parts>character. The most important stat by far is the hidden mini-turbo stat....the speed stat does damn near nothing in the deluxe version of mario kart 8 whereas nintendo changed it to where the more hidden mini-turbo stat you have=your mini turbo boosts lasting a long time. With deluxe's purple drift charge that means your boosts is going to be fat and juicy. That is why you see everyone online using the roller wheels....their hidden mini-turbo is the highest in the game. After the wave 4 booster course patch, nintendo tweeked the stats on multiple vehicle parts and characters under the waluigi (and metal mario/gold pink peach) weight group and they all got a speed+acceleration boost. This is why you see so many peach/daisy/yoshi/birdos online since this group and the rosalina/link/king boo groups benefitted the most from this buff patch. That, and the teddy cruiser vehicle you will see a lot. I did not play in too many of them, but I did join in for a bit of games in around june-august of 2014.
