Which one do you believe is worse?

huh now that i think about it i only use 7/10 to 10/10 part of the scale for games i like. when i don't like something i just give it a 1/10 lol

i voted the 5/10 option. dont see the point of using the middle part of the scale

We need a universal 4 point scale imo since it feels like anything that is a 5/10 and below is just automatically booty butt-cheeks.

4 - Game is hot you should totally try it
3 - Ey its pretty good. There is a few flaws that is either minor or moderate depending on how youf eel about them but I don't regret the purchase.
2 - Man this game is kind of iffy. Way too many things keeping it from a day 1 buy but its not a total dumpster fire. Best this game is gotten on sale or a cheap physical copy if you don't have something like gamepass or gamefly.

To actually answer the poll definitely the 3rd 1. If some reviewer just gave a game a 0/10 or 1/10 these days I would immediately think that its some sort of kind of review bomb drama so they tend to go ignored from me. I have actually never seen the second type that gives a middle score to every single game ever, lol.

The overhype every damn game type though? Plenty of those types everywhere. Something that is actually sorta' middle of the road like dying light 2? 9/10!!! Saint's row (the recent one) because the reviewer played a single mission and had fun with their buddy but somehow did not manage to see a single glitch yet? 9/10!!! Bah.

In the hands of modern reviewers, the 10 point scale hasn't been fit for purpose for a while. 0-6 are just different flavours of shit. 7 is mediocre. It's not until 8 that 'good' kicks in.

Good
Excellent

That's all you need.

I don't really like the numbers in general.
If I'm interested in the game I'd rather listen to someone talk about it for a while. Gushing about how they love it, tearing it a new one if they hate it.

Feels more sincere than someone who tells you the gist of the game, some brief ups and downs then gives you a number out of 10.

Do the first two types exist outside of annoying shitbreak youtubers?

The more time I spend reading criticism, the more I agree with using less granular scales. A 5 point scale (e.g. 5 stars with no half-points) is a pretty good sitting point for me. People are way more likely to give 2 stars than 4/10, even if it was for the same game

I'd give something like Deadpool or Fullmetal alchemist a 5 or 6. Solid game nothing amazing though and you'll probably only like them if you are a fan of those characters.

No what annoyed me was a reviewer who out right said in his opening line he didn't typically like this genre of game.which led me to think this game was an exception to him. Nope still rated it like a 4

All 3 sound equally pointless. Using only one or two numbers defeats the purpose of using numbers in the first place. They might as well just say they like it or hate it.

On second thought, the 2nd one is slightly worse than the others, as at least the other two give some idea of whether the reviewer liked the game or not. Giving everything 5/10 doesn't even do that.

The only reviewer I watch is ACG and he just does "buy, wait for sale, or don't touch it". It effectively gets the point across because you should be paying afternoon to the content of the review rather than just looking at the number.

All 3 are heavily biased, but I'm not too fond of the constant 9's and 10's. Not every game can be that good.

The best reviewer uses the whole gamut of scores or does something similar to ACG with the "Buy, Wait for Sale, Never Touch" scale. Honestly, the number system sucks regardless.

I don't know if that would work for me. See I don't mind a 6/10 game. Yeah gonna hopefully wait till it's in the bargain bin but just cause some reviewer thinks I should wait doesnr mean I wouldn't love the game.

What I do if I bother with reviews is I find the highest rated review and the lowest fully expecting both to have some bias but whatever both agree on I'll take as the truth till I get to try myself.

Personally I like when a review rates various categories like gameplay/controls story music etc. Like I'll play a game with horrible story and maybe bad music/sound effects if the gameplay makes up for it. Rarely if ever does a video game have a story good enough to justify shitty gameplay but it can boost a game with mediocre gameplay

How many reviewers exclusively rate games in the ways TC suggests?

I would prefer a simple thumbs up/thumbs down system over arbitrary numbers

Don't get me wrong, I love cynical negative reviews. Yatzhee Crowshaw, TehSnakerer etc

But notice something? They don't give scores.
