Maybe they thought Trump was the fascist populist they dreamt of only to realize Trump is moreso an opportunist who used fascism to get into the White House and do crimes, while DeSantis is the real fascist they wanted all along.

Trump is still fascist, no doubts there. But DeSantis has been doing literal Nazi shit since taking office.

Because he lost to Biden and then continued to make an ass of himself with Jan 6th.

DeSantis is more controllable as well.

DeSantis gives them full fascist flavor with none of the party-consuming cult of personality.

The RNC wants their candidates to still be subservient to the party itself. Trump functionally created MAGA party that doesn't really need to play with the GOP and is far too big for the GOP to ignore. That's too uncontrollable for the GOP.

Because Trump is aggressively criminal

The RNC thinks it can control DeSantis.

Because Trump's electability (and the electability of those he endorses) has steadily declined since 2016. His benefit to the Republican Party has always been short-term; the voting populace as a whole simply does not want to live in the perpetual state of turmoil and uncertainty that comes with Trump dominating the party. We're at the phase of the arc where the mobsters desperately want to wash their hands of the Joker after unleashing him in a last-ditch act of desperation, and are finding that it's nigh-impossible to do so.

Too bad for them the base isn't backing DeSantis. Also 45 will tear him apart in the primary.

In some ways, DeSantis is worse than Trump. He's proactive in his bigotry whereas I think Trump is mostly in it because bigots fawn over him. In other respects, it makes more sense for the Republican party to side with competent evil over a buffoon who's only in it for himself. Trump would not hesitate to go third party if he could convince himself there was a chance of winning. (And I haven't ruled out the possibility that he may yet go third party out of spite once he gets passed over.)

I don't want either one of them to be anywhere near the White House, but I understand why the RNC would side with DeSantis over Trump.

As others have mentioned, it's because DeSantis is more controllable, so to speak. They know he's just going to follow along with party lines. Whereas Trump is going to do whatever he feels like doing. Even though they align on similar ideals, it's far easier for them to trust Ron to do what they want to do than it is to trust Donald.

Theres also the polling that shows Biden generally losing to a generic Republican candidate but always beating Trump. He cant win at the national level.

Trump will be in trial for one of his many criminal cases in the middle of primaries. They need to hedge from one fascist to another just in case.

There is nothing to wonder about. They know that Trump is toxic to everyone outside MAGA base. While republicans will vote foe him they won't win over many if any independents with Trump. They see huge losses coming.

Of course then they have the problem of losing the MAGA base if Trump tells them not to vote.

With abortion especially, they've really painted themselves into a corner. Even going down the line, they've embraced positions that are widely unpopular with the general public.

I think the only reason that DeSantis is running is to place his primary platform, "culture wars", onto the main stage, as the republican party sees railing against trans people as a winning issue. I think he's there to make those ideas central to the election season, so that when Trump wins he can easily rope in the rhetoric.
