I went on one of those five pointed islands, the small ones, that look like flowers. The bottom section fell out and crashed onto the ground. Are they all like that? What purpose does it serve, the bottom falling out? Is there any actual point to those islands?

there is a very boring, tedious point to them, yes. they're for a quest once one of them plops into lookout landing, which i believe occurs after finishing your first major quest, as in where you meet and help one of your sage friends
