Like, who ARE there guys? They're space Marines, but they also seem to be zealots/cultists/inquisitors unlike Aliens/Doom/Halo/Starship Troopers marines. Like, the dude I'm playing as seems to have more in common with the Halo Covenant Brutes than the UNSC Marines. I'm playing as a bad guy killing other bad guys? Is that what this is?

Everyone in Warhammer is an asshole.

In Warhammer 40k, there really no good guys, only shades of gray, very dark shades of shades.

In the ancient past, a bunch of shamans got together and melded their spirits into one in order to be reincarnated as a powerful psychic that could guide and protect humanity from Chaos demons that devour souls. In the far future, he's the God Emperor, and humanity spreads throughout space, but starts running into the demons and also all sorts of aliens. He creates genetically engineered super soldiers, but a bunch of them are like "fuck you, dad" and decide to worship Chaos instead. They fuck up the entire empire and leave the Emperor comatose. 10,000 years later and shit is still fucked, it's basically a brutal scifi dark age where everyone worships the Emperor's barely living husk, and they have to hunt down any signs of Chaos heresy because the alternative is having your soul tortured by demons forever.

Emps also was pretty openly atheist and anti religion and actually got pissed at some of his boys worshipping him while was alive. So he'd be upset at the current hyper religious state of his Imperium.

Unless that was the plan all along, which is one theory.

Space Marines themselves are genetically engineered super soldiers with multiple extra organs and all kinds of wild ass shit going on.

It's very interesting stuff. I'd recommend watching a couple lore videos if you're interested in the general setting. The Space Marines alone have so many different chapters you could spend ages learning about them. Basically the Space Marines in 40k are walking tanks that are created using the genes of the 18 Primarchs, who are essentially living gods of humanity that the Emperor created. They're a hell of a lot deadlier than the typical sci-fi Space Marine.

They forgot how to build stuff like spaceships and vehicles, so the ones they got are holy. Trying to understand how they work so they can be repaired or build something new makes you a heretic.

You have the spirit right, but the Imperium is still capable of manufacturing things like space ships and advanced suits of power armor. They operate on strict religiously guarded manufacturing processes, and innovation is harshly forbidden. So for the most part, technology operates by repeating rituals that have been passed down for generations. The why forgotten but not the how.

That being said, they have also lost the ability to produce plenty. But they aren't so incapable as to not being able to put out new ships and ground vehicles.

I thought it was the same thing as the IronStrider which they dont dare turning off.
