but the last minute fights were partly about Republicans wanting to raise military spending. Anyone actually taken a deep dive into this budget deal and what the fuck happened, or is this all just political grandstanding bullshit?

Really? McCarthy agreed to this, but will the rest of the Republicans in Congress? Some of them have been very vocal about wanting a lot more and feeling like they have all the leverage. I wonder how good the odds are of this actually passing?

Actually, I've heard people increasingly talking about how many Dems he'll be able to get to support his bill.

Basically, the negotiations (for him) are more about trying to get enough Dems to offset the "Freedom" Caucus members who clearly just want us to default and have stated it's all or nothing.

It's the only real hope McCarthy has, but also there then comes in the Dems members who will refuse to vote for it based off what's proposed, however I think there's more than enough Dems for what he needs if he's smart about it. Thing is, Kevin McCarthy is not a smart man.

However, fuck them for even doing this at all. These are the people who cried that we can't forgive $10k in student loan forgiveness because "you gotta pay your debts" and here they are threatening to destroy the global economy and long-lasting detriment to the U.S. by not paying a debt for expenses already accrued.

It saddens me how many Dems still treat the GOP as if they're somehow decent and respectable people when even the "moderates" (lol) are at best silent on allowing this to happen.

But at the end of the day, McCarthy gets to say he only conceded on raising the debt ceiling. Something he had to do regardless. There is no amount of cuts that prevent the deadline.

Trump hasn't put anything out on his social media yet.

He's going to sabotage this whole deal and run his mouth he does.

He's one of those few people begging for a default at this point.

Biden fancies himself as a dealmaker, unfortunately he's not a very good one. Harry Reid had to straight up forbid him from participating in 2013 because he gave Republicans way too much in 2011, something Reid is still bitter about.

Having said that, Biden really only compromises with them when he has to. During his first 2 years the only people he really strode to appease were Manchin and/or Sinema to get his legislation passed.

He's also gone the furthest in calling out the extremism in the Republican party, straight up calling them a threat to democracy, semi-fascists, and that they're only doing this to hurt him in elections. Unfortunately he, like most of this nation, grossly underestimates the reality that the entire party is just extremism now. Even the "moderates", whatever few there may be, will just capitulate and give the extremists whatever they want. But Republicans have always specialized in minority rule, so I guess we're seeing that extends to even within their own party.

I hate that the deal supposedly includes cuts to IRS funding. More IRS agents are needed to audit rich people because rich people's taxes are more complex.

Republicans are surely going to lie again and say that more money for IRS agents means middle class people get audited more, but The IRS themselves have said they audit middle class people more when their funding is cut because they don't have enough agents to audit the wealthy.

They already figured out that Janet Yellen decided to bolster the IRS with the specific intention of targeting the common persons side hustle. Specifically, youre now required to report any sales over $600 so that Uncle Sam can take some. Nobodys going after the rich. Theyre just doubling down on the people need extra money.

I've seen that $600 thing everywhere, and even got an email about it from my bank. Are you saying you don't think it's true? As far as I know, it is. Now, as to the Republican's motivations---obviously they don't care about common people and just don't like the IRS. But the new reporting standards really are burdensome for people.

The wealthy were audited at a much higher rate back in 2010 before Republicans in Congress slashed the IRS budget. The restoration of at least some of that funding was part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The IRS has said they are going to use that additional funding to start auditing the wealthy at higher rates again. If they don't do that then obviously that's a problem but they won't even get the chance if McCarthy gets his way and that funding is cut again.

The only negotiating that should have occurred is how many Republican tax cuts for the rich we would be repealing, since none of the promised wealth ever trickled down. If the GOP didn't want to raise the debt ceiling then Biden should have had the fucking spine to invoke the 14th amendment and if the GOP wants to fight him on it then let the litigation begin.

The most frustrating part of mechanisms like shut downs/debt limits/etc. is that half of our legislators believe that the federal government should essentially do nothing.

Imagine if every three years if a bill wasn't signed, universal healthcare would suddenly become a reality (I know this is opposed by some Democrats as well, but I'm not able to come up with a better example right now). And the GOP had to come to the table and give concessions for every social program under the sun or else the Democrats would just let it happen.

Like...I obviously think that would be good, but it's crazy to think of such a one-sided mechanism as that.
