This tirade against AI is so nonsensical lmao. Humans truly are afraid of the unknown. But we'll get through it. Just like how we got through burning witches
AI isn't really an unknown. The tirades against it are because they can pretty easily remove the human element from... Many different kinds of work honestly, and that we're unprepared to handle it. We can't even treat each other well, and now cold and pure efficiency is being injected in to workplaces where we already get treated like trash.

I feel that intentionality is a vital part of what makes art, art. Even if the intention is something as relatively trivial as "entertain whoever consumes it", it still counts as art.

Since the AI obviously isn't advanced enough to possess self awareness, it cannot be regarded as an artist. However, the programmers, the individuals who feed the code various examples of preexistent art to train it and whoevers entering the prompts for generating it could maybe be regarded as a collective of artists, albeit ones who likely have no direct communication with each other.

So it's an awkward new form but AI art just about manages to actually be art. However, as someone earlier in the topic mentioned, there's a design by committee feel to much of the content generated. So, I'd argue that, while it is technically art, its profoundly shit, pointlessly derivative and intellectually bankrupt art. The kind of drivel that, if it were applied to films, would make the most thoughtlessly generic blockbuster seem like a philosophically dense epic.

As for whether it should be used, as someone with dyspraxia who has a fairly vivid inner life and who doesn't appreciate gatekeeping at all, I can certainly understand the excitement it invites for those who otherwise might never enter the art world. But, in spite of how vital art is to culture, its remarkably difficult to actually make a living doing it and these tools only further hinder that. You don't need to employ as many writers if more than half of the script can be just about competently done by an algorithm.

I feel like the venn diagram between AI Artbros and Crypto Bros is almost a circle. The arguments supporting both ("it's the future," "it has limitless practical applications," "adopt it early or fade away,") are very similar, and the faux enthusiasm regarding unremarkable example #4567 feels just as forced.

AI art exists and we all know it. It's not that shocking or impressive anymore. It's not revealing an unknown aspect of the Mona Lisa. It's just stealing a pattern and regurgitating its soulless imitation into the background.

This basically sums up my entire problem with AI right now. We threw it into society with a massive hype machine behind it, as the fuckin tech industry literally can't make any minor breakthrough without immediately putting one hand in their pants and the other on the keyboard ready to tell the social media manager what to say, and now we're at the uncomfortable place of AI being an amazing tool, no one knowing how to actually use it, and what it's actually useful for being lost in the hype machine while it flounders about basically being the next Metaverse/Blockchain deal.

Which is a shame, because AI is legitimately revolutionary stuff, but due to the roll out we'll likely be left with heavily lobotomized leftovers from the mix of hype, carelessness, and fear.

I feel like a lot of people who hype AI art have the same understanding of art as people who look at Jackson Pollock and are like "mY kId CaN sCrIbBlE tOo".

Yeah I've felt like even if you were the kind of person to be like "who cares about people who lose their job to AI", you should at least be self interested enough to realize that misapplication of AI is going to lead to your own life generally getting shittier as companies cut corners thinking a glorified chat bot can solve their problems.
