HEYBURN, Idaho Two dogs running on Interstate 84 in Minidoka County were shot Saturday evening by an officer with the Heyburn Police Department.

A graphic video posted on social media shows one dog collapsing on the road, with another one lying nearby, as the officer stands near the driver's side of his vehicle. In a news release, police said traffic was "completely stopped" around mile marker 212 after officers responded a report of two dogs causing "safety concerns" on I-84.

Heyburn Police said upon arrival around 5:57 p.m. Saturday, officers found the dogs running on the interstate. Police reported officers whistled, called and shouted at the dogs after two people attempted to capture them, but the dogs were "uncooperative."

The dogs were not in range to use a taser, and the officers made the decision to shoot the dogs at 6:03 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

The dogs did not have tags. Heyburn Police said the dogs were shot once each and removed from the interstate.

The area of Interstate 84 where Saturday's incident happened has a speed limit of 80 mph. Police said officers were concerned with the "traffic hazard" due to the speed limit and heavy traffic during Memorial Day weekend.

Wandering, untagged dogs might be indicative of them being street dogs/aggressive and hostile dogs owned by shitty people, but I feel like you'd need more than five minutes of interaction before deciding to just off them.

Meanwhile in Australia when my mother worked in a semi-rural area she found a snake in the office and two men were immediately went out to collect it.

Not at all. I asked what the reasoning was behind police being dispatched to these cases and not more suitable professionals. If you dont know thats fine. I just thought you might based on your post.

Well we also have to take into consideration the uniqueness of Australias animal situation. Theyve built their whole society on having to deal with dangerous, poisonous animals.

That's my thinking. Short of Emergency vehicles - which are a priority- blocking the road is a minor inconvenience. But there was no emergency (at least reported).

Hell, someone get two cheeseburgers (roofies optional) and throw it to the side of the road. That will clear the dogs. Get some cages and voila!

Not a foolproof plan, but I've seen similar work.

Certain parts of rural America are notorious for having some city council cousin being the 'Animal Control Officer' and spending their entire time drinking their paycheck.

If these were family dogs, the owners didn't care enough to keep them secured or tagged if they got loose. If they bit, even playfully, even one person or someone else's pet they'd have had to be killed anyway to check for rabies (which is done by dissecting their brain).

Bad optics, but this one is square on the owners shoulders. Unless they're dumb and looking for a payout from public sympathy, they won't pop their heads up any time soon.

Really? Wow. I think growing up, my hometown had a two-bite rule. One is a ticket/summons, and the second is the animal is destroyed.

But that was assuming it was just an accidental bite and not, you know, someone getting absolutely mauled by an animal out of control.

Vaccination records are important. That's supposed to be on the tags or obtainable from the owner/vet numbers on the tags.

If the dog's been vaccinated for rabies, anything else is treatable.

By the time rabies symptoms occur, the infection has gone past treatable stages, but it communicable before those symptoms occur.
