I replayed the original somewhat recently. It's still somewhat impressive just how detailed everything is. Obviously there's limitations, but like if you want to dive down into a liquid storage area you can, even though there's nothing there. The enemies will move around when they're not on screen. The characters react to what you are doing.

Counter-Strike started as a Half-Life mod. Team Fortress started as a Quake mod and then a Half-Life mod.
