It's like Romney and Bain selling the bare metal shelves from Toys R Us to make some pennies.

But these FAQs are only found here, and when they go, there goes a chunk of internet culture and history. There's no where else to serve them up, whether as a historical curiosity or for retro fans who will never see a playthrough for (pick old and maybe forgotten game).

4chan's /v/ board was doing it but I don't have the links handy.
They started archiving all the FAQS they could the moment the Fandom news hit.

Technically nothing is scrubbed. They just set an impossibly high user level to access it

Backing up the forums is perhaps an idea.

Nothing is stopping you. Go waste that time.

Why would they scrub the part of the site that actually draws traffic?

Because anything can happen at this point.

Because capitalism often makes little sense.

"We can shutter this for a decent profit now."

Or

"We can keep this open, run a smaller profit that will eventually be bigger than the immediate profit we'd make by ending it entirely, and it would keep doing that in perpetuity."

What do you think board and c-suite and shareholder numpties are going to pick?

What would the greater, short-term profit be by shuttering the FAQs?

Like the fundamental idea behind your hypothesis is missing.

It looks better on the quarterly papers.

Even places like Stanley Black and Decker sold off struggling divisions instead of righting the ship and keeping them as a trickle of stable revenue. And it was all in service of making sure they didn't break their century long record of offering a dividend.

The stock price of their company is directly impacted by their quarterly portfolio. And stock prices right now, for the investors and the board who can parachute out whenever are more important than a healthy business with longevity that only makes a tiny razor of profit on the regular.

It's the difference between shareholder and stakeholder economics.

Fandom is acting like a vulture capitalist firm like Bain. There'd be a bump in the numbers from selling off GF for parts, so to speak, and it'd be a bigger bump now than just keeping it alive as-is.

The actual business can die if the investors can make 10 more dollars today, instead of 11 dollars over 10 months.
